Spent some time in MN a few years ago for work and enjoyed some Michelob Golden Light, now that is my fishing beer at home. I do like to throw in some IPA’s once in a while (Same Adams Rebel, Alaskan Icey Bay, Big Sky IPA) but you have to be careful with the 2X IPA’s (New Glarus Scream, Alaskan HopoThermia, Sam Adams Rebel Rouser), these will sneak up on you quick toast

Went to high life for my drinking during the day when fishing beer when they stopped selling Glueks in a can.

No Mich Golden down here. That was Michelle’s beer back home. Beer distinction and marketing confuses me.

That’s Ann’s beer of choice as well. They don’t sell in southern Texas either. Strikes me as odd that it can be so popular in one state and not even on the shelves in other.

I love Alaskan hopothermia. Got to agree it will sneak up on you.

Working with Summit unchained hop silo IPA tonight! P.S. 8.4%

I like trying out a lot of different IPA’s… but have to admit, for me, nothing compares to Surly Furious. In the summer I do switch over to a slightly lighter IPA – Descuttes Chainbreaker.

Budweiser is my beer of choice right now. I was and still am a craft brew guy and brew my own beer, but I am getting tired of the craft breweries over-hopping their beers to the point of undrinkable bitterness… (Stepping off soapbox).

However, if I can find a nice ale that has good citrus flavors and not bitter that’s my go to for craft beers. My new favorite is from Fargo Brewing Company called Iron Horse.

I’m with you on hoppy beers. I’ll drink them in the summer, but they get to be a bit much.

My favorites remain porters and stouts, but they aren’t good when its warm out.

Havent drank in 38 years…wait wait 38 minutes. … New Castle today!

Because my inlawas are Geordies going back many generations (Geordie is a slang term for residents of Newcastle in northen England), I feel it is my duty to point out that Newcastle is one word, not two.

    Newcastle Brown Ale

As testimony to the wacky nature of brewing these days, Newcastle Brown is not brewed in Newcastle and hasn’t been for decades. Rather it was brewed at the John Smith’s Brewery in Tadcaster, which was literally within sight of the last place in England where Mrs. Grouse’s parents lived, the tiny village of Church Fenton.

    Another thing.

Guys, is it wrong that I CANNOT stand the current fad of over-hopped IPAs?

About 87% of the craft beer out there today falls into this category of sour, overcooked, overhopped, IPAs and to me it all tastes like cat pi55. Unbalanced, smelling like lemon floor clearer and battery acid, with undertones of strange barnyard oders. And that’s the good ones.

I got two gifts of micro-brewed beers for my birthday and with the exception of 1 6 pack, it’s all rancid, overhopped IPAs and APAs. Blah.

Why’s it gotta be this way? Why does everything in American beer have to be massively overdone? If a few ounces of hopps are good, well, yup yup it must be better to use a few pounds…

I like Newcastle Brown, Pilsner Urq, the Usual German Suspects, dang a good Oktoberfest Maison style is great at that time of year. In the winter Beamish is great, Guinness when I can’t find it. At Christmas, break out the big bottle Abbey stuff. Those monks from Belgium have been keeping it rockin for centuries, no use messin with success.

For domestic stuff in the summer, hows about living the High Life? Absolutely nothing wrong with the Champagne of Beers if it’s painfully cold. Heck, nothing wrong with a PBR as long as we’re on the subject, or a Schlitz lager if you can find it. Or if heading west, Rainer is just swell on a hot day too.

I even like the Weissbiers out now, I love that spicy, citrus flavors in the summer. Bells Oberon is terrific when it’s hot.

    No.

I picked up a IPA that was good, but I can’t remember the style. I thought it was Belgian IPA? Belgian something, but it was good.

I like lagers like Fosters. American “lagers” are too processed, bland and watered down.

X3, Grouse said it better than I did. It’s the same as the hipsters who now have people convinced PBR is a good beer! (Sorry to the guys who like it!).

Belgians, while hoppy, aren’t typically bitter due to the amount of malt and grains that are in them. And they have higher alcohol % on average which isn’t a bad thing!

Have to admit as much as I like certain IPA’s – they are highly caloric. Two 16 ounce tappers of Surly Furious is about 500 calories. Usually don’t notice it the night of (duh) but the next day I gotta loosen up the belt a notch or two.
