What Annoys You Most About Ice Fishing

I love ice fishing but every year there are little things that annoy me or make we wish I was still in the boat. Whether it’s a little annoyance that is consistently there, or something you always seem to run into that drives you crazy while you’re on the ice.

Mine is there’s just no good way to have a two man shack and be even semi mobile (even with a smitty sled) when the snow gets deep, without a four wheeler or snowmobile. Any others?

The amount of people out there. Lakes are overrun. Especially with rookie type anglers.

Ice fishing isn’t what it used to be. Hard to be on fish by yourself anymore. Not as much fun for me IMO.

Trash, cold, the fact that I am staring down a hole vs driving around in my boat.

Snow, trash and leaving some space particularly on the big lakes. I know what the law is and I’m ok with it, but still…

#1 annoyance is people setting up right on top of me at prime time. If I am in a boat, its way easier to make a quick move. This has gotten way worse in the last couple years IMO.

#2 is forgetting something. Extra propane, charged auger battery, seat cushion, shovel etc. Seems like there are way more things on the list to remember than just dumping the boat in that already has my rods and tackle.

#3 is my tip ups freezing up.

    People and trash

I agree. Not people so much just the pigs that leave the ice covered with cigarette butts and beer cans. Or the scum bags that decide they do not want to clean fish and leave them to rot.

Trash, and the general lack of respect. One reason I use the rule of thumb… when I can cover the group of people with my thumb held out in front of me, they are close enough! It’s getting harder now to get away from the crowds on more popular lakes, but I enjoy searching new water and areas.

I miss the days of solitude when icefishing, especially at primetime. Now all I can hear are generators running and what seems like constant commotion.

The work in going. Seems like it is WAY more packing, hauling gear versus backing the boat in and heading out for the day.

Walking any distance=sore feet. The aftermath of 49 years of working on concrete.

Loud music from pickups and kids repeatedly buzzing by in their baby snow machine…

What annoys me most about ice fishing is when we get some really cold weather and we are a few days away from setting up perfect ice for the season and then we get a heavy wet snow storm that messes everything up for months.

I love every else about it except the trash but I rarely come across that where I fish

I hate how big of a pain in the a$$ it is to move and follow fish. Sure I can drill 100 holes, but side scanning and moving the boat in their direction is wayyy easier!

People who bring their kids and pets and then sit in the house while their kids tear up and down the lake on a snowmobile or atv buzzing everybody’s house and just being totally obnoxious.

Kids are one thing. It’s dogs that drive me nuts. My definition of a “trained dog” is very different than 95% of the population’s. If it doesn’t stay very close, listen without being yelled at repeatedly, leave other people alone, and follow basic commands with ease…the dog is a nuisance, not trained.

I had one clamp on to a jumbo perch on a backwaters tip down years ago. He burried a treble in the roof of his mouth. I felt somewhat bad for the dog, but his owner was nothing short of an idiot when he asked me why I didn’t stop his dog. Keep in mind, the dog’s owner and everyone else was fishing a community hole close to 300 yards away while I sat on a shallow flat all by my lonesome quietly pounding 12-13″ perch.

Snow=lack of mobility, In one trip my boat can go anywhere on any metro lake or fish a big area on most lakes in the state and my boat is not even that great. Snow can tie up any machine, open water yes rain can mess you up but when the rain is done its done, gone, a foot of snow falls and there it is, not going anywhere.

Not a thing. I don’t own a boat so ice season means I get to fish on my own, where I want, when I want, and how long I want, without needing to rely on someone else to get me there. It’s my absolute favorite time of the year.

Um not really excepts for when back then people would just come around and ask for auger gas. Then fishing line, then bait, then hooks…Well why don’t you just ask me to spill my tackle box and you can pick any ten lures wouldya…
