The first full week of the 2016 open water fishing season proved to be pretty decent fishing on Leech lake. I have been out 6 days in a row with good results. With a variety of weather situations we were able to find active fish every day out. From heavy winds to flat waters spring time walleyes can be had on Leech lake. When the wind blew the bite was a bit better but even on the several flat calm days we managed limits of fish, just had to work a bit harder. The jig and shiner was the bait of choice but I talked to other anglers that did well on live bait rigs with leeches or minnows. Water temps went from the low 50s to the low 60s thru the week. Windblown points and shorelines produced fish as did off shore sand flats. Moving about was required to find active fish as always but once a walleye was found there were more to be had. Look for the same pattern to hold as active depths ranged from 8ft out to 15ft, with wind or lack of dictating the depths. Shiners seem to be in short supply and the run could be over. This will put leeches and crawlers more into play in the upcoming weeks of walleye fishing. As for location you should be able to find walleyes on main lake points, windblown shorelines, weed beds, sand flats and off shore rock reefs. Walleye size has been a great mix of keeper size fish from 15 to 19 inches with several to many slot fish in a days fishing.
