How do I fix my drag fellas?

Tatula spinning, quantum throttle spinning, Sahara’s, the drag gets all F’d!! So frustrating. Thought it was a cheap reel deal but first time with the Tatula in colder weather the drag acted like the rest of them. Impossible to set, get er tight and a quarter turn the other way it’s loose as all get out.

I’ve done nothing as far as lube goes to the drag washers or spool.

I fished all weekend sun up to sun down. 31 deg in the AM and my drags were all smooth.

Only drag issues I’ve ever had were in the winter (below zero) and that’s why I use the Tica’s. They are smooth right out of the box and I’ve used them for many years.

edit: Sorry I’ve never fixed a drag issue, just switched reels so I have no advice on fixing it.

I had a drag once…I kicked her to the curb.

Never had a President or Tica come loose on me though. Back when I had a ton of the older gold Sedonas, it would happen all the time. But it was also a game of Russian Roulette if the backreel would even lock. Hot Sauce Oil may help you, or hurt you. I’m not a mechanic, nor a doctor.

    A couple things to check:
    – If you are running braid without backer/electricians tape it’s likely slipping on the spool.
    – If that’s not the case, I would disassemble/regrease your drag. I’ve used Hotsauce and the purple Cal’s drag grease (meant for colder climates). I’m not sure one is better than the other.

My guess… tough to dictate if you did or did not lube the drag discs from reading your post.

Since you or factory lubed the drag discs the grease is getting gummy/stiff in cold temps. “IF” you are going to use anything use oil on drag discs. Most are used dry with no grease to avoid such issues.

Same with inside reels for winter/cold use, oil or mix of oil and a tiny bit of grease.

You may be able to clean the drag discs with a solvent such as carb cleaner or other oil dissolving chemical.

I’d agree with Sean – I’ve had a couple of reels that had braid on them and it would slip on the reel when cold.

Doesn’t hurt to clean and re-lube, too.

I’m not sure if the tatula has a sealed drag system but I’ve made the jump over to Daiwa from pflueger this year and purchased the ballistic and damn what a reel but I’ve noticed the drag only needs like a few clicks for any change in drag strength so a 1/4 turn may be over doing it.

    Back reel.

I crank the drag tight and back reel. Always. Been doing that forever.

    Never had a malfunction.
