Anyone else waiting on application results for any western hunts? A buddy and myself SHOULD be hunting WY for mulies this year. Burned up 2 points each for a unit that was 100% with just under 2 points, so as long as the point creep doesn’t go crazy for this particular unit we should be good to go.

I got drawn for colorado Elk last week, going to start doing some planning here in the next week or so. We’ve been to the area before but this will be my 2nd time out for elk.
June 9, 2020 at 9:31 am #1948554I put in for a WY general mule deer tag. GoHunt says it’s a 98% chance of drawing with 0pts. I have my name on the list for a MT turned in elk tag but guessing those are hard to come by. Who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and end up winning a supertag raffle or a WI elk tag!
June 12, 2020 at 2:58 pm #1949603I pulled a General Wyoming Elk tag this year to go out early september and should be getting a West River Muley tag. Of course I wont be able to miss out on the MN and WI bow hunting as well!
One of my good friends that has Mule deer hunted with me for a few years also got a colorado with a couple other friends from SE MN.Hopefully it will be a great year for everyone and the experiences last a lifetime!
June 13, 2020 at 5:10 am #1949685I didn’t draw a tag for CO, so I’ll just have to put a dent in the P/dog population
tbro16InactiveSt PaulPosts: 1170June 13, 2020 at 7:18 am #1949698I went soft this year and only applied for an MN BWCA bear tag. If anything I’ll end up doing an OTC CO elk hunt again. Goal for next year is doing more research and begin applying for elk in WY and/or ID. Havent started to mess around with points out west yet.

It is QUITE the rabbit hole, and it doesn’t help that each state does things a little differently. Unfortunately for non-residents, preference points are becoming less and less “valuable” due to point creep.

[/quote]I have a few friends that are over 10 points in WY and have alot in others and its tough for them to give up all those points to turn in on another unit but them being just one point behind who knows if they will ever catch up.
June 23, 2020 at 10:12 am #1951984My buddy and I DID end up drawing our Muley tags, but just barely. The unit we applied for was like an 82% draw with 1-2 points, 100% with 2 points last year; this year was only 32% with 2 points and we got lucky enough to draw. Point creep was real this year for sure. I think going into the draw cycle many were thinking that due to covid it would keep many potential hunters home, but I really think the opposite happened. Whether it was the stimulus checks, more people being laid off and having more time, or whatever the reason I think many more hunters decided that “this is the year”. Heck, there were two guys who burned 12 points and two who burned 10 or 11 (can’t remember) in our unit this year, which obviously influenced the lower point draw odds.
Either way, can’t wait for October!
ClownColorInactiveThe Back 40Posts: 1955June 23, 2020 at 4:50 pm #1952116Struck out on an easy antelope draw. Tough draw this year for sure. Might try OTC elk but with limited PTO this fall, may have to pass on a western outing.
June 23, 2020 at 5:05 pm #1952121We were drawn for Wyoming deer and antelope. I thought the same as waldo9190, that folks would back out due to covid. Plus, Wyoming let you back out up to the drawing date. We had 2 guys screw up on the group license so they didn’t get drawn on the antelope. Just rented a camper for the week out of S. Dakota. Stayed in a hotel last year. The camper should make it more of a hunting camp I hope. Good luck this fall.

Good luck to you as well!
We’re planning on camping so hopefully it doesn’t get too chilly. Will be bringing the 949i out there instead of a tent, so should hold heat way better in the even that it gets really chilly.

I’ve got a buddy that lives in Denver and I’ll be flying out there to hunt an OTC elk unit for the 2nd rifle season with him. If we’re successful, how in gods name will I be packing any meat home?
Is shipping meat a viable option?
Renting a car is possible, but requires a $300+ drop fee to rent from Denver and leave in Minneapolis.
Are there any other options?August 21, 2020 at 12:06 pm #1967077If that happens you could try to get it setup under LTL freight but even that would be pretty costly. I think there are shipping firms that you could set it up with as well. We used to have my uncle take out meat into a warehouse in Alaska and I think we paid around 1-1.50 per pound to ship our fish back. This was also a few years ago.
August 21, 2020 at 12:08 pm #1967079I have flown on a couple hunts for work, and getting the meat home is usually the biggest challenge. Usually it involves coolers, dry ice, and expedited shipping and/or checking the coolers as luggage.
