Looks like by this time next week we get into the deep freeze. If that 1-3″ is light snow the ice should be really nice for first ice

Upper Michigan hopefully will have a couple of inches by the Dec. 21
December 6, 2016 at 10:45 am #1654954Small 125ac lake I go by on my way to work was locked up this morning in Central MN.
December 6, 2016 at 1:53 pm #1655009We need this wind to stop. Water temp is ready just need a calm night.

It might as well blow as long as it’s snowing. If it was calm there would be thin ice with snow on top. This way the water is open while it’s snowing.
Once the snow stops the wind can calm down and it’ll lock up over night
December 6, 2016 at 5:49 pm #1655062I’ll have my boots on the ice Thur morning (Northern MN).
Wade if you could let me know how the ice is up there. I’m planning on coming up next week. I have family in town. Thanks
shady5Posts: 491December 6, 2016 at 6:38 pm #1655072I plan on walking out to fish on Saturday morning around Duluth. After next week’s cold snap, we may be able to take sleds!
Carl SPosts: 60December 7, 2016 at 7:40 am #1655138saw geese standing on hardwater on my drive to work this morning! Any guesses on when the smaller metro lakes will be safe for foot travel?
December 7, 2016 at 8:28 am #1655154Not sure how accurate the old charts are, but I would say a week away from 6 inches if the wind cooperates. Monday and Tuesday are going to be like 2 degrees which creates ice at a rapid rate

December 7, 2016 at 8:48 am #1655170if the forecasting holds up and it doesn’t snow heavy at the wrong times I bet we will have ice on some metro lakes within 7 days. You prob wont find me walking out until about 10 days from now but according to the forecast, in 10 days from now we might be driving ATV’s out! Yikes cold! looking forward to it though.
December 7, 2016 at 8:53 am #1655171I’m normally hyper safe, but would like to get on early ice. Hopefully a week from now we have more than 4″

Yes, the timing of the snow (of any significance) is always the wild card. If ice sets up in the next couple days and then we get the predicted snow this weekend, it could cause some issues…bummer!
Meanwhile, looks like Isle Bay is starting to set up…Attachments:
bigpikePosts: 6259December 7, 2016 at 10:40 am #1655199The wind surprisingly had little to no effect on ice in the Phillips area as most local lakes locked in last night!
nhammInactiveRobbinsdalePosts: 7348December 7, 2016 at 11:54 am #1655210Rogers on Red posted, any wind change might hurt but cmon, this is nice to see

Glen, tomorrow is no go. I did not find safe ice anywhere on my scouting trip. I have one lake that locked up earlier this week I’ll check out in the AM, but I’m not holding my breath. IF we have safe ice by Sat, I’m thinking 4″ max.
December 7, 2016 at 7:44 pm #1655354BUT….after everything I just said. I was just outside and the wind has all but stopped and the current temp is 19*. I’d bet most lakes will lock up tonight.

Looks like if I wait until after the weekend it should be good to go !!
Thanks WadeDecember 7, 2016 at 9:03 pm #1655369I just booked at Macs twin bay for next Thursday. x my fingers
Say what?? What did you book at Mac’s for next Thursday? A reservation at “Da Boathouse” restaurant? What could you possibly book for next Thursday there?

The 15th? Take a look at the forecast. Bet sleds and wheelers are getting out then.

But you don’t need to book anything for that. Just show up, pay your $10 access fee and out ya go. Unless I’m missing something, whatever you might book or make reservation for would be a sleeper or day house? I’d be shocked if Kevin will be pulling those out by next Thursday!

They may need somewhere to sleep whether that’s a room or a sleeper shack on the shore OR optimistically, the sleeper on the ice. They’ll pull their smaller houses out with 8″ with light jeeps/wheelers, I believe.
Have you seen what a 24 hour period like they’re forecasting for next Tuesday, the 14th, can do for ice-making? Especially when there’s little to no snow on the ice.

Yep, I am bit surprised at how quickly ice is setting up. Isle Bay is now ice covered. I just remember last year I had sleeper house reservations for mid-January and had fingers crossed because they didn’t get the big houses out until the week before. But then that was last year.
Getting excited myself because I’ll be up over Christmas and would be great to get out there to celebrate the holiday by icing some plump walleyes!
