Even though this has been pointed out by many, I will add that <em class=”ido-tag-em”>walleye are the most overrated fish for eating. Not saying they are bad at all, just not properly rated.

I wont disagree with this at all. They are however the most consistent in taste however and having the ability to keep a decent sized one that is worth cleaning. Sunfish especially, while they taste awesome I will NOT clean. They are a PITA and even if I am fishing for them I dont get that many decent 8 or 9 inchers to make it worth it.
Perch are my favorite to eat but even finding them is hard to come by but I am better at that than sunfish for sure.

All from cold water with difficulty of cleaning not a factor (and not considering trout)…I’d go

    1. 10-12″ perch
    2. 8-9″ bluegill
    3. 14-17″ saugers and walleye

Nope that sums it up for me too. Pike are good too, but I rarely keep any which I know I should.

When it comes to cleaning fish I think walleyes are the easiest to clean.
When it comes to eating them it’s all fish to me.

Got it thanks. I’m fine either way. Harvesting fish isn’t taboo.

Do we read the same forum? Haha! Worse than trout fisherman in the west around this forum.

I don’t get to eat it very often but I find saltwater fish to be much more flavorful than freshwater fish. Freshwater fish is very bland by comparison. I would never eat another freshwater fish again if I lived near saltwater.

Because they are constantly being brined……

Do people really enjoy eating trout? I have only had rainbows and all the times I have had it I thought it was terrible no matter how it was made.

Brook trout from crystal clear water over an open fire in foil with some butter and a squeeze of lemon will make you never want to eat anything else

Were they wild or pellet fed rainbows?

It was a stocked lake up off the BOundary Waters off the gunflint. I am guessing they were pellet fed then I suppose. I dont normally fish for them. Fun as heck to catch though!

I wouldnt even know where to find those. I will take your word for it. We cooked these on the charcoal grill. Whole fish. Very delicate meat, I just didnt care for the taste and Holy Hannah the flatulence we all got. Wowsers.

Heck yeah, and there is a great rainbow lake not too far from you (I know quite a few members that would prefer it would remain unnamed). Just gut em, leave the skin on and put them in tinfoil with butter and lemon. Rainbows are excellent table fare imo.

I enjoy catching them for sure! I would give them another shot I guess. There are a few trout lakes not far from me that I know of as I am sure there are others I dont know about. Maybe this summer I will give them another shot. Better not forget the stamp!!!
