I had a reason to swing by Cabelas today and I had a gut feeling I needed to steer clear of the gun counter but NOOOOooooo….. just had to take a look around!

In recent comments I’ve made, it would seem I was hell bent on adding a 17 Hornet to my varmint lineup. The 17WSM just didn’t make enough sense to me.

Enter “The Famous Grouse”. He and Randy seem to have this knack for influencing me in a positive way and given recent discussions, Grouse made a lot of sense in what I wasn’t seeing for myself. I’m not sure if I should thank him or blame him for what happened this afternoon but nonetheless, I dropped for a new Savage Bmag 17wsm today.

I saw the sale tag and it was discounted heavily. Gray laminate stock and it had the newer, updated bolt that disqualifies it from the 2015 recall. Comes with a scope….. cheap, but has hold over marks out to 350yds. I’ll most likely replace it but I’m curious to know how accurate the marks are.

Looks like I’ll be taking another option out to South Dakota next year! Thanks Grouse!

    Nice!!!!!

I’m leaving for Colorado/Wyoming tonight and have had about 2 weeks of pure hell. I have 1,480 rounds loaded for Streak, my howa 250. A buddy picked up a Bmag 17wsm and we were playing with it at the range. He made a lot of modifications including a custom beavertail styled bench stock for it. He topped it off with a Athlon Argos 6-30×56. We were drilling dime size groups at 150yrds. Winds picked up too much to reality put it to a test at 300yrd . It tormented me for a week thinking I need a short range rat gun for super high volume. We have a couple custom 223s, we take, but we still need time to let the barrels cool. Now I’m back to wishing I picked up another plinker

That’s encouraging Randy! I’ve been considering that same scope as a replacement! Out of sheer curiosity, I’ll still try the accompanying Banner scope with a BM350 reticle for 20gr. rounds but I don’t expect it to impress much. Here’s a pic of the one I picked up. I forgot to mention that the gray laminate stock is from Boyds so they must’ve made some sort of deal with Savage because it comes in the box with a Boyds stock on it. The LOP is a “lady” model so I can share it with the youngsters in the family but it corrects for me if I add an Allen recoil pad.
