Weight placement

    I am designing a mechanism for bass fishing that should make lures weed less and might place it in a fishing lure that I am also designing so I am wondering if the weight placement relative to the hook affects the hookup ratio or if I just have to place the weight so the bait sits level

    @fishingdakotacountymn what do you mean?

    Anyway the first one I’d put it in would probably be considered a crankbait but I might also put it in topwater lures I might design later

    He means the weight placement would change depending on what type of fishing or lure you are using. I’d like to hear how you’re planning on making a crankbait weedless though…..

    So if the hook moves with my mechanism should I have the weight move with the hook

    I understand that you are trying to keep you design tight to the chest but you are not giving us much to go on. I started making fishing lures with my uncle when I was 12 and have played with many design ideas. The best thing to do is make a version of each one of your ideas and test them out. Sometimes it was the idea I thought wouldn’t work that worked the best.
    I would keep the weight on the lure, not the hook.

    Here’s how Never Snag lures does it.

    I tried to make the wires myself but can’t say my first attempt succeeded

    Thanks FishBlood. I have some of those and was trying to remember what they were called to post a picture.

    I wouldn’t shell out the cash for a wire form. So I cannot answer.

    I did find my last prototype yesterday oddly, I added a rudder weight so it can be used on cranks with split rings. I should swim it. Just haven’t yet. I know I made it last winter. Obviously not a high priority for me.

    Edit.

    Now I remember. These only work with big lip cracks. The lip acts as a keel. I wanted to run then with stick baits… But they roll. So adding a keel to the wire became necessary.
