Weekend Pheasant Report

I had a brief window of opportunity on Saturday morning, so while Grandma watched the grandkids, the FW, our pup, and I paid a visit to a west central MN WMA. It was overcast and very windy, which made scenting tough on a young dog, but the rain stayed at bay, so all in all, it could have been worse.

I would say about half the corn in the area was still standing. Unfortunately, the fields abutting this WMA had not been harvested yet. We parked at a far corner of the plot so that we could work our first push into the wind. Ripley got real birdy–I could tell that something was on the run in front of us. Eventually, a rooster flushed a ways out over private land. Oh well.

We continued to push on. We only had 2 hours before we needed to head back for some afternoon plans. Working back towards the truck was less than ideal with a strong wind. We tried to zig-zag as much as possible to let Ripley’s nose have a little bit of a chance. He uses the wind well, and you could tell that he was a little frustrated with me. As we got back toward the truck, he went on point. I flushed a nice hen. We kept going. There was a nice brush pile about 50 yards from the truck that looked really inviting. I worked Ripley around it as my wife came around the other way. She stumbled on a rooster. It caught us both off guard, and while we unleashed a few shots, that rooster got lucky. rotflol

All in all, it was a fun morning despite not bringing home any birds.

Good times! Did you find a lot of water? That is the general area I normally hunt, but haven’t been out yet. I was fearing there was going to be a ton of water.

It was wet but not as bad as I feared. This particular WMA has some marshy/cattail areas and a small creek/drainage ditch running through it (that Ripley felt the need to dive into). Those were wet, but the rest wasn’t bad. The local rivers were quite swollen, though.

Thanks! Yeah, he’s a tank. He’s 80 pounds. My wife is vertically challenged, though, so that makes him look even bigger. )

Nice report! I made a trip down to Nebraska for a wedding this weekend, and the harvest is on in full force so shouldn’t be long for most of the corn and beans to be picked. Saw quite a few hunters in southern/sw MN, but none in Iowa or Nebraska…

Ralph where about in SW Mn did you go? I live just south of Willmar and there are quite a few pheasants around here. I don’t hunt them anymore since getting into bow hunting but I can point you to several that hold birds.

I also hunted West Central MN this past weekend. I have a 10 mos old pup, so I know not to expect too much this year but just try to enjoy the learning process!

Friday was hot and windy. I decided to only hunt the evening and got lucky with one rooster. Macy (my pup) didn’t really do anything to help but was along for the ride.

Saturday morning was tough. Warm and humid, also windy. Didn’t see a bird all morning. Decided to wait again until evening. A front rolled through and temp dropped and humidity cleared. It ended up being a great 2.5 hour hunt until dark. Flushed 7 or 8 roosters and watching my Macy learn a little from each one. We shot our two, and it culminated on the last one letting her take the lead and tracking a bird 10+ min before producing the flush and shot. Good times!
