Weed walleyes

I have a question for some of the more experienced walleye guys than me. This past weekend we did good pulling harnesses right along the weeds. It got me thinking about pulling them over the tops of weeds. I realize speed and amount of line behind boat will affect the depth it’s running, but do I just pull them with no weight and play with speed and amount of line out?

I’ve always pulled them with enough weight to match speed and depth I’m looking for. Also depends on water clarity sometimes. If you want to get the line out from the boat run a little less weight and send out more line.

Without weight I think they are hard to control and there will be an optimal speed – at least there usually is. Just carry some egg sinkers in varying sizes and play with it.

Over the tops of the weeds can be a great presentation. One of the better walleye days I ever had was on Winnie over the weeds. It was 80 degrees with bluebird skies and we still throttled them.

Thanks Matt, that’s exactly what I was wondering about

long line, small bullet sinker, barrel swivel, 4′ snell, perch colored blades. Works well for me in clear water. probably get 3-4 9″+ gills to every walleye though.

    1/8 ounce or even lighter?

Just add some weight and let line out until you feel the weed tops. Than bring it back in some. If you feel like you have too much line out add some weight. If you don’t think you are far enough away from the boat and want more line out, take off some weight. Speed will also play a roll in how much line / weight you will need.

1/8th oz sinker with this program is usually where I start and end but have used some 1/16th oz bullets here and there as well.
