Weber Performer grill

Before I go out to buy a new grill I am going to see if anyone else has had this problem and knows the answer.
My Weber Performer has worked like a charm for years. It’s about 8-10 years old.
Will not light anymore. When I turn the gas on the only thing that lights is the little hole near where the gas line hose connects with the burner assembly tube ( not supposed to be flame there however).
Even trying to light it by holding a match to the burner end does not work. New ignitor on it by the way.
Hooked up the big propane tank and hose to my Big Buddy Heater and everything works fine. Hooked up a single little propane bottle to my Big Buddy and it works fine. Neither of these propane tank configurations work on the Performer grill however. I took the burner assembly apart this fall and cleaned it out and it worked a couple times but that was it. Before I spend $50 on a new burner assembly has anyone been though this before? I LOVE my charcoal grill. 12 months a year grill 2-3 times per week.

Run a little brush through the tube that carries the gas from the orfus into the grill where the flame is. Cobb webs is my best guess. happens to me all the time

The other item if you can hear the igniter clicking and hear the fuel is a dirty orfus. To clean remove it and blow it out because the hole is much smaller than any drill bit you will have. I don’t remember the number but they are sized in thousands of an inch.

A great way to clean orifices is to pluck a wire from a wire brush with a Vice grip. Then with wire still held by Vice grip, probe the orifice or ports to clear and clean them. This technique works great on carburetor jets also.

This is what I do on my camp grill and it works every time.

Spiders build nests in there and gum up the orifices, blast out all the openings with an air compressor

Make sure the burners are off before turning the tank on. A lot of regulators go into low pressure mode if a burner is on when the tank valve is opened

Just a thought. Did this problem start after you filled up the propane tank?

If they overfill the tank the overfill protection device chokes the propane supply and gives exactly the symptoms you describe. This has happened to me several times, I had to hook up a heater to the tank and burn off some propane, then it worked fine.

Wondering if this is your problem.

Actually Grouse, I brought a tank back because it would not work on either the grill or the Mr Buddy Heater – thought maybe it was defective. That was probably the problem.
So far so good- steaks were delicious and I am grilling again. Amazing what such a “little” hole can do to cause problems!!
