Mowed the backyard Saturday (just picking up late falling leaves).

Walked the dogs 2 miles on Sunday in shorts …

Trade it for 7″ of clear ice on my favorite ice fishing spots and 3-4″ of snow for a pheasant hunt or two.

Allegedly Santa was spotted on Lake Pepin on a jet ski…or a closely dressed imposter.

If it was any of the IDOers out there, kudos to you. Even at 50 degrees that had to be a cold ride.

I miss ice fishing a bit here on Pool 4 having only snuck out twice on 3” in early December, but I’ve never got so much outside work done at this time of the year.

My 3.5 year old daughter and I fenced a few dozen trees today, cut brush, and detailed the wife’s ride outside. Tomorrow I’m going to climb up on the roof of one of the sheds and replace a couple vents in the morning, before we go pull an old fence line for one of the neighbors that I told him I’d get to this Fall.

If it takes another week or so for walkable ice again here, I won’t complain. Winter is plenty long and everyone knows next year it could pay us back tenfold

No drastic temperature drops forecasted for the next 2 weeks, just a shift towards temps being only slightly above normal.

Some of those big tandem axle ice houses might be pushing it to get 5 weeks of on ice use this year (depending where people go)

I hear there are people still open water fishing Lake Koronis. I also hear there were a fair amount of ice houses that fell through on Rush Lake near Ottertail lake over the weekend. CRAZY winter so far to say the least.

Someone posted it will be a record late ice up on ‘tonka, that could turn into a record ice out too.

With the lack of ice, the fish should get a decent reprieve from all the pressure. Gotta be some positive in this goofy weather.

5 weeks of use? I was thinking more like none at this point if this continues. Half the state is literally starting all over on ice.

Certainly good news for wildlife after the brutal winter last year. Deer, turkeys, and pheasants should be doing fine. At least for now.

Not as great for grouse. That deep snow really helps them avoid predators.

LOTW will get them on, as will URL is my guess.

The guys that hit Mille Lacs and the Cities with big houses are going to either put on miles or use them as campers a lot more this summer.

I’m patiently waiting for the Ice Castle auction that will occur in another month or two if they are still collecting dust in people’s driveways.

use them as campers a lot more this summer.

I assume that everyone who has one already uses it multi purpose as a non-winter camper. Having just for ice fishing season doesn’t seem to justify it anymore.

My brother in law had one and used his way more often as a weekend camper than he did for ice fishing solely because the ice was only thick/safe enough for a short period of time. I see a fair amount of people who use them as hunting shacks too.

Amen to that. The last few springs I’ve thought to myself “why didn’t I do more of this last fall,” “why didn’t I pull more dead brush” or whatever last fall. In November I had quite a few of those days where I believe I set myself up to be a little more ahead in the spring. Then early December gave us some unseasonably warm days and I did the same. This past Saturday (23rd) I got the chain saw out and took care of a few more things.

Bucky, are we gonna find ourselves with all sorts of free time next spring and have nothing to do? Not a chance, but it’s been very nice to get ahead of some yardwork I’d maybe be starting in April.

Still miss ice fishing though. This in-between-holidays week was one I had marked to maybe put some half-days in at work and *gasp* maybe get some fishing in during the week when it’s less crowded….maybe next year.

I’m currently 7 miles from the north end of bowstring lake. That ice on the lake looks black as hello. Like late March early April ice.

I wouldn’t step foot on it right now.

I had people fishing in front of my house yesterday in the BLA. It was really cold last night. Should be good to go tonight again. Had 8 inches of hard black ice before all the rain.

Before the sheriff’s office could get to the scene, bystanders tried to rescue some people using a canoe. However, four people fell into the water during this time. They were pulled back onto the ice floe and went into a fishing shelter to warm up, according to the sheriff.

Beltrami County should just station at one of the resorts until further notice.

Lakes are ready … they glaze over each night when temps are in the mid-20s … just need 5 days of traditional 0 high weather and it is game on.

A massive, slow-moving low pressure system is scheduled to roll through the middle of the country in about a week. Right now the models keep it south of MN, mostly going through Missouri, Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and into the Great Lakes region. Its supposed to be significantly colder, so most of it will fall as snow.

Any shift in track northward could bring some measurable snow here.

    Snow would be worse.

Weight of snow on thin ice … complete mess.

Snow insulates the ice from the cold.
