I have bought a car through a member on IDO and it worked out smooth. I have also bought and sold a handful of cars on craigslist and marketplace over the years. When dealing with large amounts of money from a stranger I would only accept cashiers checks and sometimes go with them to the bank to get the check. Good to go to the DMV to to know the title gets transferred correctly. It is nice to be able to vet people you are dealing with through marketplace.

I still use craigslist more as a search tool because you can create saved searches for items and really narrow down what you are looking for and it will send you an email when something gets posted that meets your criteria.

If anyone has a used Toyota Sienna minivan they are looking to sell, depending on the year and millage I would be interested in upgrading our current one.

TIP: If you use Marketplace, have the first line say “IF IT’S LISTED, IT’S AVAILABLE”, and the last line say “SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE”.Eliminates a lot of goofs who ignore those lines and ask anyway.

Just listed my 2016 Suburban on my wife’s Marketplace account yesterday, after zero responses from Craiglist and other fishing website ads placed 8 days ago. Had about 15 inquiries, 8 being the goofs which I didn’t even respond to, and the rest legitimate inquiries. By the end of the evening yesterday, I had two that offered asking price subject to seeing it and test drive, and one that offered $600 over asking price, which I sadly turned down as I had already made a verbal agreement with the first asking price offer. Sold it for $9k over trade-in offer. Definitely worth the messing around it takes.

If the vehicle you are selling is worth a significant amount of money, trading it in will save you sales tax. In my area 5.5% tax adds up.
Figure a $20,000 trade in value would be a sales tax savings of over $1,000.

It still doesn’t make you whole on what you lose out on a private party sale vs trade in. I was just talking to a metro dealership last week about a Tacoma they had and asked them what they’d give me for my Silverado. They said they’d essentially offer the kelly blue book trade in value which is ~$19k. Based on my market research, I think I can sell it private party for around $25k. The phrase “spending dollars to save pennies” comes to mind.
