I was on a couple of different sites reasding about snow hunts and I just have to say that anyone who sneaks up on snows must not be a very good hunter or doesn’t get a thrill out of seeing 5,000 snows over your head tornadoing as you lay on the ground with a big smile on your face because of the thrill you get from it. No two tornados are the same and they all are just magnificent. I just don’t understand the thrill in belly-crawling or dressing as a cow to sneak up on a flock and pounding five shots into a cloud for 5 seconds of excitment. I have tried it one time and it was miserable the crawl the banging and then, well that’s it pick up the three dead ones and chase down 20 more–how unsportsmanlike. Maybe it’s just me but there’s nothing like seeing those little ross’ geese come in like crazy, cutting the air and dropping 20 yards in no time, or the huge tornados of snows and blues, or the fact that there are so many birds above you that you have to keep your eyes closed because POOP! The rewards for setting up socks is amazing, the only decoy easier to pick-up than to set out 500 rags is nothing for 4-6 guys to put out, so set-up laydown forget about cows and enjoy the snow show.

that statment is so incredably WRONG i don’t even no where to start ……

as many know, last year was the first year i went snow goose hunting in the spring……to say it was the most amazing thing i’ve ever wittnessed in my whole entire life would be a complete understatment. there is know way to describe what i saw without actually being there.

YES…….we sneaked, crawled, jumped, pushed, cowed……and everything else that so many despise . but ya know, it was fun……not because we slaughtered and ground pounded the #$@% out of em……but because of the over all experince.

let me share a story with you…….

one day we spotted a flock of a couple hundered sitting in a plowed corn feild, just on the other side of a hill. me and a buddy were able to belly crawl to within about 60yds before we couldn’t go any further without being spotted…….so we just layed there on our backs in the mud tryin to decide what to do…….as we layed there, another flock of a couple hundered circled and joined the feeding flock. then another flock came, this flock had closer to a thousand birds……then another…….and another……and another!!! there was a never ending string of snow geese coming from the south and droppin RIGHT IN from 100yds up!!!…….as you described, we were in the vortex of a snow goose torando. after about an hour of laying in that feild and just watching thousands of geese land practically on top of us, we realized that the closest bunches were feeding towards us, and were now only 30-40yds…….we could have easily just sat up and raked em……but we didn’t. instead, we just kept watching, admiring what was happening. another 10 mins past and something spooked the geese, as they all got up at once and flew right over us (i will never forget that sound)…….i shot twice, my buddy shot twice as the geese flew over at no more than 20yds……..didn’t hit a thing

but we left that feild grining from ear to ear ……we could have easliy gotten our total body count into the 20’s if we would have sat up and pounded away……but it just wasn’t worth it.

we ended our trip last year with 3 snows and 1 blue……and i’m goin back out in a week to sneak, crawl, push, jump, and cow some more…..if we get a bunch, ok, if we don’t, whatever……it has nothing to do with how good of a hunter i am or what i get a thrill out of

huh………thats funny. Looks like somebody just wants to start an argument. Unfortuanltely………I am gonna lower myslef and add a little .

i am with Jake on this one. I’ve been goin out west for a couple years now hunting snows. SO FAR, i have never decoyed any yet. Not cuz i dont wanna, but because i dont have the $$$ to. And dont tell me to go buy 5 packages of paper plates. I see where you are coming from kinda……. there is nothing better than decoying birds in your face. I have had some tremendous hunts on canada’s and ducks, i can only imagine a flock of 5k snows bellering in yr face.

But i also think it takes some skill to be able to sneak up on a huge flock to. Them birds aint dumb, one reason why there are soo dand many of them. Let me guess, you are gonan complain about people jump shooting ducks too?? Whats wrong with that? Either way, you are shooting the birds. Its just another tactic to hunting. Some guys hutn fields, others water, some layout hunt, and others jump shoot. I do all of em. IMO its just another way to get some meet in the freezer.

and i aint gonna lie….. the more geese i shoot the happier i am. We eat everything shot…….heck i just got done making goose burger spaghetti.

I will share one exiperence with ya. 2 yrs ago out west, me and my buddy were putting on a sneak on what we thought was a couple thousand birds in a bolw of a field. It ended up that after the 1-2 hrs of sneeking, there were about 10K in there, at least! Anywyas, it was the most miserable feeling i had, i was wet, numb, muddy, crawing thru shin deep ice water in carharts on my hand and knees. But i loved every minute of it. We ended up shooting a big load for 2 guys, but then i ran out to pick a criple up and i fell thru the ice. LOL…… but ya wanna know what, i was so excited i didnt care. We pickeup up all the birds, searched for straglers……. and realized that hard work pays off.

OK………..start firing your argumentive spit balls at us………

i sneak ducks/geese/deer/turkeys/sprinted after a coyote last weeknd……. last turkey season, i snuck up on my 23lb Tom…….. sorry boys, but i “must not be a very good hunter”…… but i have also put out 12+ dozen mallard dekes over water too, let alone all the goose dekes along………

TO EACH HIS OWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…….. (thats not a thumb either)

Well apparently I have ruffled some feathers, don’t get real defensive about what I’m saying here. An argument is not what I wanted to get into but apparently the mudcatkid wants one, well I on the other hand do not. But I will say a couple of things. Jake hit it right on the nose what I was trying to get out there (just don’t know if he realizes it). Now jake take that exact feeling and do that all day for a weekend and you will never go sneaking again, unless a flock lands about 1/2 mile away, then they take all the birds with them, another story I know. If that never ending string of geese is around like it has been for a while, you can then tell stories of geese landing 10 feet from you instead of 30-40 yards ( I had one actually tip my hat). As for the catkid, you sound a little more frustrated, once again sorry, difference of opinion. But now I will lower myself, a little. The dollar signs are, sorry, a joke. Unless you hunt in MN for what $5 (I think) the gas money alone on a trip anywhere long will cost more than a package of rags (licenses are another add on to $$$) You sound like a dedicated hunter and so I assume you have many hunter friends, for $50.00 each you and 5 buddies would have 600 rags to tow along that’s it. I don’t know how long you’ve been chasin’ snows but I have found that, and once again sorry , but snows are in fact a pretty dumb bird. A little skittish, yes, but when you decoy them and shoot at a flock of , oh, 500 or so, about 1/5 or so will swing back around and start to circle back down again, the more birds around the more that will come back. But when you see a ton of birds there are double the amount of eyes looking down so that is where a lot of people get smart confused with skittish. Now I didn’t want to start a fire here or “fire some argumentive spit balls” at anyone but just sticking up for my actions as the both of you were. I have snuck-up on plenty of game in my years and will continue to do so, but why when they will come to you? Good luck to both of ya this spring if you make it out and turkey huntin’ and trout fishin’ is just around the corner

hehe…….no harm done. I just get sick of the other people on all these forums saying sneaking in unsportsmanlike….not jsut for snows, but everything. But heck, they can think what they want ……. as for the $$ ……..well, its IS true. i am not tyring to complain, but college tuition, let alone truck payments and all my other “hunting needs” cost some ching. I just rather spend the $$ on canada goose dekes and trailer cuz i hunt them way more often than i do snows. When student loans are done for….then i will whip out the $$ on some snow equipment.

skittish is kidna word i was looking for……. ,……….. but the second i call them dumb, i find myself getting duked by thier little pea-brains

if you’ve read any snow goose hunting forums for any amount of time you would no that this topic always get’s WAY over heated, and that no one will ever win …….that’s why i TRIED to make my last reply as friendly as possible

but i will have to agree with MudCat on the money issuse….cause it is an issue (the biggest issue) .

with Non-Res lisence fee’s being as ridiculous as they are, $45-$90 depending on the state…….plus at least $50 in gas per person……plus hotel room for 3 or more nights…….plus at least 5 boxes of shells @ $10 a box……plus any food that you plan on eating…….

the price get’s up there in a hurry for the jobless college kids among us .

….and i was always under the impression that those rag’s don’t work worth a lick…….especially if you only have a couple hundred ……but then again, i can’t knock it sense i’ve never tried it

Well jerad, I see you are from Iowa and to tell you the truth I am supposed to go down there this weekend with a couple of buddies, unless my baby’s mama has our child, and shoot some snows if their connections say that they are down there. The woman may be against it, but I haven’t turned down a huntin’ partner yet so if I’m goin down there I’ll let you know and you are more than welcome to join us. Anyhoo, I never said decoying snows was easy, but much more emotionally fullfilling for myself and my party. And what kind of charmin do you use? Rags is all we hunt with,Northwinds and Texas Rags, and E-callers, and I am here to say 100% honesty that in the last dozen spring hunts I have only snuck 2 times and decoyed the rest of the time. The last time I went snow huntin’ you asked, snows in MO was the title in the forum, four titles ago. It was the 21st and 22nd of Feb. in NW MO. I think we had 750 to 800 rags out and 4 E-callers, but I have to admit that my numbers were a bit off at 107, went to get some whites at my buddy’s place and he hand counted 122, including a neck-banded blue I shot and took to a taxidermist a couple of days prior (first neck band). But if you are serious about hookin’ up this weekend looks like a possiblity, don’t know were we are going because this will be my first spring hunt in IA. Speaking of Iowa I went to college in Boone for 2 years playing baseball.

well there ya go, you sound like a credible hunter…not that i was doubting you earlier…i see you use northwinds with the rags…taht is a very very good idea..wish i had about 20 dozen northwinds but the college budget doesnt allow…..ive been making sandbag decoys for a couple weeks now…much much cheaper than northwinds…i figues 100 bags cost 30 shipped plus 27 dollors for 100 dowells..plus spray paint and zip ties…figure i got around 70 cents per decoy….oh and i hunted in nw missouri last weekend…we shot 56 in 3 days…we did some jumps when the sun got high in the afternoon and birds were harder to decoy…probably about half decoyed birds…we had 6 caller speakers plus 500 sand bags and around 300 rags….but i still hate those rags….one other thing, the birds were very responsive to flagging…there were around 200000 birds on squaw creek nwr…im guessing thats where you were too…i would be going back down there this weekend but i have a wedding to go to..but the weekend after that i will be there….while driving back north last weekend we saw a couple thousand on the ground just north of shenandoah and we saw several flock going south by atlantic…heard there were a couple thousand at riverton…good luck this weekend

I might be running around on the River over break after i get back form snow hunting. so i will keep an eye out for ya.

went to a Free-Style Snomobile Competition in Milwaukee this past weekend…….it was SICK!!!!!!!!!! Some of the guys were pulling backflips on thier 450 lb machines!!! We were close to the action, in the bleechers, and we made a KICK AZZ sign with flames and a skull, cuz they were filming for the new Slednecks 7 movie………well, the camera crew filming liked it so much the producer of Slednecks talked with us for a while and gave us his card to get ahold of him!

How about cost as a reason for sneaking? I don’t have time to read all these posts, but did someone say Tx Rags ?? LMAO…. this may have worked 10 years ago, but I would love to see someone consistently draw snows in with Rags nowadays. Come on! I am but a fledgling Snow hunter, but my mama always told me I was kinda smart. Heck, if your full bodies aren’t in good shape, you may have issues.
