I drove south of town a few miles today and seen a few small flocks of geese, all over the local cornfields but in the air. I got a little farther out of town and looked east twards the Cedar River and seen close to 200 flying out over the river bottom. We have loads of local geese around here, after a small introduction of them some years back now they number in the hundreds, maybe a few thousand, i don’t know for shure. I know quite a few local guys hunt the rivers and thier tuck away spots for them and there always seems to be just as many the next year as the previous year. Where i live they fly over my house to the fields at night then return to the river the next morning almost like clockwork. I’ve seen a few flocks lately, in the last couple of weeks, that thier flight and actions don’t resemble the geese that live around here. Im just wondering if some of those geese are coming down from minnesota, they fly higher and just don’t resemble the local geese in thier actions and voices. They just sound wilder. Im trying to learn to read geese because i’d like to hunt some ducks and geese this next year. Im wondering now how long its been since they left minnesota, or still leaving the rivers, to try to sharpen my pencil on thier habits to see if any of these geese i’ve been seeing are from up north. Quite a few smaller flocks, 5 to 15 birds, over the fields and all were flying twards the bigger flock and to the river. Nice flock of geese today right over the river and landing on it at about 10:00 this morning.

There are still some geese around SE MN on the Mississippi, and of course Silver Lake in Rochester, MN will hold them all winter long. I would imagine you will see geese come and go from your area all winter long. As long as there is open water somewhere, and feed in the fields that they can get to, they will be in your area. A good cold snap may send them packing, but it also might bring in some from the North. The last 3 years I have seen geese all year long.

Did your geese leave with this cold snap? I was up around Lake Pepin (pool 4) this past Friday, and the river was full of mergansers, goldeneyes, and other divers right up to the ice line. They are probably gone as I bet there is no open water now with this cold.January 7, 2004 at 1:35 am #287671Mossydan

They have been coming down for about three weeks though. These are geese that just don’t act and sound like the locals that we have here. Im almost shure from what i know that they were from up north by the height that most of them were flying at. The locals are still flying around and im shure most of them are locals.

Nothing better than having a good mergy hunt
Actually…i was riding my 4wheeler along the river the other day near some large open water and saw huge #s of mallards…well….just a couple thousand…LOL. I wish the season we extended up to about christmas. at least WI has the split and we can shoot mallards into Dec.
