The start of the Rochester second season started with a real bang! Started to time the geese around tues. and found that they had a later flight pattern so we went on deer drives in the mourning and set up about 11:00. Feel sorry for the guys who set up at sunrise because the geese started to fly about 11:30, scouting pays off yet again. 4 guys 8 birds in oh, hour and a half. birds seemed real comfortable until we pulled up on them. Sat. was more of the same deer drove in the mourn. but it was warmer out so we set up at 10:00 there were more geese flying out and for longer periods of time so once again 4 guys 8 birds, but took us 2 hours this time. Sunday took me and two buddies to Faribault for one last hurrah at the 5 bird limit. Ducks were litterally all over the place easily 5,000 in the air, it was continuous throughout our hunt. Then the geese came and they came and they came! Flocks of 15-50 throughout our hunt as well. very interested in our spread many in-your-face shots. If my buddies could hit anything it would have been over in 5-6 flocks, but it took us a while (2 1/2 hours) but we managed 15 birds , including my first honker band. The ducks were everywhere and I think we should pull for either a later season or a split.

The fellas up north are already saying they want the season to open even a week earlier. The last few years have been too early in my eyes. Oh yeah, how come everyone you talk to seems to think that the season always opened on the last Saturday in September. As long as I can remember up until about 5 years ago the season always opened on the first Saturday in October, so I don’t know where that one came from.
What MN needs to do is look to the east and take notes from WI. They have split the state into Northern and Southern Zones. North zone opens last Saturday in September and runs the 60 days. South zone opens the 1st Saturday in October, plus has a split. Now that is a duck season that both the northern and southern boys can live with. MN should be doing that! For the 1st week of the MN season this year down on the river we saw NO DUCKS. Why would we, WI was closed for the 1st week of the MN season, and all the ducks just flew the 300 yards to the “REFUGE”. This has been for a couple years now. Before the noon opener the ducks already have it figured out. They got pushed around all morning long, then sat down on the WI side and were not bothered. But hey, we got to get in the extra week of slappin bugs, GRRRRRRRRRREAT! I just think MN could serve the waterfowl hunters better by looking at what WI has done.

Man, I gotta find someone to hunt with around here. LOL. Sounds like great hunting, Lars.
