oh baby, was that some ducky weather we had today or what. 32deg temps+ snow/sleet +35mph winds= ducks everywhere

i had a hard time gettin my self pumped out to head out into the teeth of that storm, but i’m sure glad i did. it was pretty amazing out there this afternoon. during the snow/sleet the ducks were flyin everywhere and were lookin to land big time. it honestly sounded like WWIII had started. the guys next to me must have shoot 2 boxes of shells in less than an hour. i had only 3 decoys out (no robo duck) and was still gettin birds to commit .

but as soon as that snow stopped, so did the shootin. it’s like someone hit the switch and all the ducks were gone.

i think that could have been the couple hours of heaven that i live for all year long

I had the opportunity to do some hunting this morning and it was simply awesome. This was the day us duck hunters have waited all year for.

From 1:30 to 3:00 yesterday was awesome and an amazing sight. Mallards everywhere, but just watching flight after flight come around, circle, some break off and land, some turn and shoot downwind, it was awesome. You’re right though, after the snow stopped, the ducks weren’t up much until after shooting time. Also learned water keel decoys WILL NOT stay upright in a 30-40 MPH wind.

Two boxes of shells in that wind? The way the mallards were hanging in the wind it was like shooting fish in a barrel. I did come up 0-3 on a teal flight though. Lucky my buddy was on and got two. He had his digital camera along, hopefully I can get some pics.

On a side note, anyone ever weigh their mallards? Weighed mine the last couple of times out, had 3 last night over 3 pounds. I wonder how big they get?

well…..if you have to ask….i personally didn’t get a whole lot (like 1 greenhead). it’s true that i probably would have got a few more with a little more elborate spread. espicially since the guys next to me had 2-3 dozen out there….but i think it also could have had something to do with my extreemly lacking ability to shoot straight. even when they are hanging right in front of me with feet dangling.

but you know….to me, it’s not all about how many you get. if it was about body count, i sure as heck am into the wrong hobbies. it’s very rare for me to get more than 3-4 ducks per box of shells i shoot. i just love watchin them ducks!! i go out every spring down to the doore pools in Whitewater and throw out a dozen decoys and sit and video tape the fully plumaged ducks just pile in. i don’t no what it is, but something about cupped wings just makes my life worth livin.

When I first started duck hunting, we used to get limits with no decoys at all, just a call, or doing pass shooting. If you are where the ducks really want to go, you don’t even need a call. It’s like the old real estate saying, location, location, location!! Now, that’s not to say I would RATHER hunt with no dekes, but it can be done. We did it in college all the time. Sometimes we carried one hen and one drake. I guess you do need to hit something with the shot though Jake!!

I’ve often thought about going out in the spring with a video camera and to practice calling. Never seem to get up the gumption to do it though. Did you get some nice video?

I am gonna try and attach a picture of the birds we got yesterday.

wow…..great pic, very vibrant colors i love them fully colored out greenwings, they looks so cool. i tried mounting one last year, but apparently i didn’t get all the brains out cause it started to smell pretty bad after a week.

i agree that you don’t need a lot of decoys to shoot ducks. but it’s pretty rare that they’ll land right were you want them with nothing out there. just 2 or 3 is better than nothin. i don’t like pass shootin at all. i’ve actually stopped doin it because i felt like i was just wasting shells. now i don’t shoot until they’re coming right in. when you hunt 4-6 days a week, you can afford to be picky

I honestly ran all the way down the fence row to get to the knob on the hill. Decoys on my back and two mojo`s over my shoulder, gun around my neck. I was hooking up the power on the spinner as the last flock buzzed overhead. When I laid down the snow quit and the clouds broke. Watched them all get up and fly back to the refuge. Just missed them.

I dont think you can beat throwing out 6+ dozen mallard an diver decoys an a couple dozen geese….a couple robos…and a couple good callers….It’s awesome how the birds commit.

was out after work, on the same secret island we were at last week, ended up with 3 on tuesday and 4 on wedensday i had one other person with me. keeper(my lab) retrevied a duck out in the channel again, this time he learned to dive and caught it. it is getting more exiting watching the next duck retreived, it is almost better then watching locked wings. i will be out walleye fishing this next week, with the warm weather comming i will give you a PM, if your interested.
