Thursday I had the opportunity to watch my good hunting buddy and friend harvest a pretty cool bird. We were near our limit, with roughly half a dozen birds still able to be harvested when another flock of mallards did it up to the footbags. The shot was called and 5 birds fell. My friend said to me right away I just either shot the darkest hen mallard ever or a black duck, “when they rose up it was just right there in front of me”. After a few minutes of looking around we found his prize. A really cool looking Black duck. When I was a kid growing up in Minnesota we harvested a couple of these over years and years of hunting. I know out east they shoot more of these but getting one in a cornfield in Sodak on top of a full limit of mallards and wigeon made it even more special. It was like that cherry on top of the sunday for us die hard waterfowlers. Things like this keep me coming back. He plans to have the bird mounted. With storms and colder weather moving in we are hoping for some more new birds. Good luck and safe hunting, – Q
