Tomorrow will be my first morning out this season. Where are we at in the migration in west central MN? Obviously mallards decoys, but is it too late for teal dekes? Too early for bills?

I wouldn’t say its too late for some teal decoys. I have shot green wings in a blizzard right after shooting some bills. Can’t go wrong with a bunch of mallards either though.

Blue wingers will leave earlier than the green wings. As mentioned, I have shot green wings all the way to closing on the river.

I hunt every weekend near Fergus. There are still a few blue wingers around and some woodies, but mostly mallards right now. Bills have not come down as of last weekend. There are a few local ringers around so it wont hurt to have some bill decoys. Good luck!

We shot several teal in N. ND over the weekend. This may be a little late for you, but it may help others.

In my experience, anything different is good in a spread. So, is there really a wrong time?? Your “bill” decoys are never a bad idea, a little white in your spread is always good…. An old river rat told me that once.

IMO if you are hunting water for divers I like alot of white in the spread, if you are hunting puddle ducks I like all mallards as most any puddle duck will decoy to mallards. I have noticed an affinity for woodducks to decoy to woood duck decoys simply just putting a group of 4 woodducks to the side and they seem to eat it up. -Quintin.
