Had an absolute awesome week in Canada last week hunting geese. My Dad(75 years old) the leader of the pack, me, my son, my BIL and his son all left our hunting cabin Sunday morning at 6. Very few geese on the way up, but when we got to our location the numbers were good. Light and dark geese all over.
Did some scouting and found our first day field, set up the next morning and had our limit of darks by 10am and some snows. We spent the next 2 hours targeting snows. We had 750 silo sock light goose decoys and just over 300 full body and shell dark decoys out.
That afternoon we scouted and found day 2 field. The darks were a little harder to come by but more snows came to our spread. Wrapped up at noon with another nice pile of geese.
Scouted again that afternoon and decided on a burnt field with just a little cover and lots of geese. This was by far our best day. Again not as many darks but lots light geese. We ended at noon with 50 geese in the pile and the shoulders were starting to get pretty sore
Day 4 was back to the day 1 field and the darks were back in numbers. This day we did about the same on light and dark geese leaving us just 12 shy of our dark goose limit.
Day 5 new field we had never hunted before, but tons of geese using the field the day before. Our first flock of about 50 darks came right in on the deck and we knew it would be a good day. By 8am we had our limit of darks and were concentrating on lights and mallards.
It was one heck of a trip and the best we have done in the 14 years we have been going. 75 dark geese(our limit)65 light geese(previous record for us was 23) and 72 mallards. I can’t wait to get back next year!!
