Im thinking about starting to duck and goose hunt. Im sure that the price of decoys is variable and need some hints where to buy the stuff to make my own or where to buy some good decoys and what i’ll need. I know theres lots of good duck hunters out there and i need your advice. Thanks

Are you planning on hunting over water or in the fields? Big water or ponds?
All of this makes a difference in what you need for decoys. I hunt mostly over big water. I carry a lot of cheap Flambeau mallards and woodies and teals for filler decoys in my spread. I put in magnum herters decoys so all of the decoys don’t look the same and finish off with bluebills and cans. Most of the time there are four of us that hunt together and we all have decoys so we put out a big spread after the northerns come down.(12-15 dozen)
It all depends on how much money you want to spend on your decoys. Remember though that some of the more expensive decoys are rather heavy if you are going to haul them very far. They are definitely more durable though.
I think that your choice in hunting spots and the type of spread you choose to put out are much more important than the model of decoy you choose to use. The ability to call efficiently is also very important. If you are a newcomer to duck hunting remember that a lot of times less is much more when it comes to calling in ducks. The ducks you are trying to fool are the same ducks that have been called at all the way from Canada.
    Good luck.

I’ve got a reserviour close by plus a few lakes and ponds. There are a few mallards on the local rivers too. I know scouting for them is a must. Im going from there.

if that river your talking about isn’t too big, it’s hard to beat a late season float. no decoys needed. just a canoe or kayak. some of my most succesfull hunts have been the last few days of the season when everything is froze up but the rivers.

I know what your saying about pre-ice ducks. We go to a spot northern fishing just befor ice up and theres always 1/2 dozen or less drifting around plus a few honkers that seem to be easier to drift into for a shot. Seems like every year theres a few late season ducks around. I appreciate all the help.
