I just got back from MB, Canada (12.5 hours straight through). All the big mallard flocks are sitting up as far north as Dauphan Lake and further…. We moved from our original area of Brandon/Hamiota/Shoal Lake to the Ste. Rose/Dauphan Lake areas on Thursday afternoon because the larger numbers of birds “vanished” during the week. ….Geese were gone too. Everything is VERY dry up there. ….And with the warm weather, all the fowl moved back up north. Result: Further north,…. Friday morning early – we had no less than “10,000” mallards circling our setup – all at one time! 1/2 landed right next to our set-up about 75 yards away. What a sight!! ….And they just kept coming in!! The dogs went nuts trying to hold themselves. We did pretty well over the week though. 4 guys – limited on mallards (greenheads only!!!!). We also ate a lot of birds during the week too.
We also scored well on big Canada’s and got a lot of white geese. (Sorry,…. no pics. Too busy.)
If you’re waiting in MN for the big push, you should be watching the weather up there. Once they get a major cold front up there,…. it will freeze out what’s left for H20. THEN… they’ll be com’in down. Until then though, enjoy the bluebird days.
Sidenote: Went to the Shoal Lake DU Banquet Friday night – as usual. Had a great time and saw lots of the locals who let us on their lands. [“Networked” a’bit.] Had a nice time and met some very nice people. ….Thanks to all who gave us land access.
For now though,… I’m-a-wait’in for the same MN duck push.
……… COME-ON COLD WEATHER !!! …………
