Mississippi River guided hunt??

I’m considering a guided hunt this fall, possibly as a birthday gift for my father. Granted hunting is hunting and you never know what is going to happen, but it would be nice if we could get into some birds. If we get a guide on the Mississippi, it would be cool to get into a variety of birds, with the possibility of canvasbacks…

Anyone have any guide suggestions? Anyone hunt with any spectacular guides? I’ve seen that some cook you breakfast out in the boat. (That would be cool.) Looking for areas from maybe Prarie Du Chien on the south end to maybe Hudson-ish on the north end of our driving range…

    Thanks!

I’d check with Jake, our resident waterfowl expert. He hunts a lot down in that territory. I’m guessing he has a pretty good sense of who to work with or stay away from.

Tony Toye is the only guide I would recommend. Pool 9. Undisputed Canvasback champion of the river. I’d suggest a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday hunt in mid-late November….but he’ll be able to point you best depending on the hunt you’re looking for.

I personally would stay away from Toye. Heard more bad stories than good although I have never hunted with him. There is another guide out of Ferryville that owns a motel in town that I have heard good stories from. Like I said I have not hunted with either one. Good luck.

    Capt. Matt Raley

    whitsend:

Check out Matt, we are the first picture that is captioned on the right “Divers Hunting in November” This was our second annual “we’re taking my 82 year old father hunting trip”. 33,000 btu’s of heat, breakfast and I still can’t get Dad to go. Going to see if he will do an earlier hunt when its warmer.

He and Toye do the majority of the can hunts on P9, never heard anything really bad about Toye. Two years ago we went with Matt and only saw one duck to shoot at, this last year, well you see the results. Give him a call and tell him that Mark sent ya… The dude from Lansing owns TJ Hunters, a good restaurant in town and has taken Dave Carlson hunting on his show.
