Given the lack of cold weather so far this season, things are fairly steady. The couple days of NW winds have filtered in mostly divers, but there’s no lack of puddle ducks either.
Our group visited western MN for our sacred long duck hunting weekend and found no lack of birds. Finding the key spots and playing the wind correctly made the difference. We found no shortage of water, in fact, it’s the highest water I’ve ever seen. Ducks were finding plenty of refuge off the beaten path and it was a blast to find these birds! We pulled one sneak into a small pothole and had a couple hours of incredible teal in-our-face action.
We found mostly puddle ducks (mallards, teal, widgeon, gadwall, pintail, spoonbills) in our bags the first couple days and divers during the NW wind events (canvasbacks, bluebills, ringbills, redheads, buffleheads). It was truly a mixed bag.
With the relaxed goose season now in this area, we found some geese too and a big banded goose that’s going on the wall! Overall a fantastic hunt in some of most beautiful weather ever. (I never thought I would ever say that ).
There are still good numbers of birds in the area, and lots of canvasbacks. Watch for those when they lock into the deks. Huge flocks have been coming right in.
