Planning on going to ND for a little duck hunting around the first week of Nov. I see their deer gun season opens Nov. 5. Do you guys think it would be better to stay away during that time or is the deer hunting there not quite like ours? Thanks.

September 30, 2010 at 9:39 am #87180i would stay away if its the gun deer season… most familys out there hunt so i bet permission would be tough to come by on posted land
September 30, 2010 at 1:15 pm #87189I would say this, unless you are hunting a large body of water from a boat blind go ahead. Usually most of the time the smaller bodies of water that aren’t froze over will be getting pushed heavily by the deer hunters. If you have access to private land where the land owners know where you will be it should be fine. Otherwise I wouldn’t as come noon on Nov 5th, it turns more into deer hunting then anything else.
Good luck
September 30, 2010 at 2:27 pm #87192The landowner we stay with says stay away. Its not a place for duck hunters at that time. With the warmer falls we have been having, we actually plan to hunt until the day before and drive out the day deer starts…

Easy access to property. No encounters with deer hunters. We’ve been doing it for 6 years now without issue. It’s always been a great experience.

I think it depends on where you go.
September 30, 2010 at 10:26 pm #87260We’re thinking of leaving the weekend before the deer opener and hunting through the next weekend. I’ve been out there 3 times and have seen a handful of duck hunters…I know there’s not alot of trees out there so I guess I was just curious if they hunted the grassy fields hard or if deer hunting was just the thing to do..like it is here.. at that time in general.
October 1, 2010 at 3:16 pm #87328Dido, depends on where you go. But if you are out on opening deer season near CRP, tree groves, slews, ponds, coulees, etc keep a watchful eye. A large number of people just don’t risk it. Take care by asking the land owner, taking orange with you for your walk back and forth, and whatever else you can think of. It is flat country for the most part and rifle units for the most part.

October 5, 2010 at 1:20 pm #87642If you already have land to access, go ahead. If you plan to hunt public land, PLOTS, or other, stay away. All long range rifle shooting out there.
If you go, wear orange at all times, to and from blinds, and you should be fine.
Much of the small water is likely to be frozen then, so you’ll be limited to larger water or field hunting near larger water. Field hunting should be fine but take orange out there as well. Don’t want some DA firing their long rifle into your spread thinking its actual birds.
Based on our falls being warmer and warmer, this is actually a great time of year to be out there for the snows and large flocks of mallards.

October 5, 2010 at 5:05 pm #87669The best ND hunting I have had was the first week of November during the deer hunt. You will notice many more fields posted, however 90% of them are posted to keep out deer hunters. Get a plot book or search down the land owners and give them a call. They do use rifles out that way so having some blaze orange around to alert guys is a good idea.
carmorrisPosts: 75October 12, 2010 at 12:30 pm #88367We make a habit of getting out there the second week of deer season. Most of the loonies with rifles have their deer or are done with hunting. The field hunting can be phenomenal. I do agree with the posting of land that it is almost entirely meant for deer hunters. Ask around and you’ll find the majority of landowners out there are top-notch folk who gladly give permission to waterfowlers over big game hunters with long-range ammunition.
