FYI to all hunters in west-central MN.

Great timing and planning on the DNR’s part. This project has been in the works for awhile, but construction during the hunting season? The only public access is closed as of yesterday with no options in place.

Lake Christina accesses to be closed until mid-November

    (Released September 20, 2010)

Public water boat access on Lake Christina in Douglas and Grant counties will be temporarily closed to facilitate the construction of a pumping station that will allow the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to manage the lake’s water levels.

Accesses will close Monday, Sept. 20 and remain closed until construction is complete, which is expected to be in mid-November.

The Christina Ina Anka Lake Association is working to secure an alternate public access while the DNR access is closed.

For more information, waterfowl hunters and other users may contact Tom Carlson, DNR waterfowl habitat specialist in the Fergus Falls area office, by calling 218-739-7576, ext. 244.

It’s funny how perception varies between people. I used to hunt a lake that I had all to myself because the access needed to be dredged out. I was upset after the DNR ruined the lake by dredging the access and allowing the “lazy” hunters access. Those of us willing to put a little extra work in had easy access.

Same goes for Lake Christina. Get rid of that big azz boat and run your canoe. You’ll have almost exclusive access to the hunting on Christina as most people aren’t willing to put in the extra effort.

I can tell you’ve never been to Christina. Your comments are a bit unnecessary.

The public access is just that, the only way the public can access the lake unless you get permission from a private landowner. Boat, canoe or walk in waders….no difference.

Many waterfowlers enjoy hunting on this lake, and it has a strong tradition. There have been multiple attempts to restore this lake, but to close the only access during waterfowl season is not exactly good planning on their part. I’m all for another improvement project for this lake.

I hope those who travel from afar don’t arrive at the closed access. Informing the public of this news release was my main intent in the post.

Just cause the landing is tore up doesn’t mean you can’t get a canoe in there. I can see if you can’t back a boat in or park there. But canoes carry fairly easily. Walk around/through the construction and throw your canoe in the water.

You are correct, I’ve never been there.

So my question it them is why in the heck did they wait until sept 20th to do this knowing full well that duck hunters hunt on that lake (like me) with the season just a few weeks away.

I drove by the project last week and noticed that the Christina lake association built an access for hunters to use north of the public access. Big thanks!
