I just returned from North Dakota chasing snows across the northern half of the state. We were pleasantly surprised to find birds in some of our favorite goose hunting lands we’ve hunted in the past, and we also found other hunters during the mid-week. There are still lots of birds to be had out there, including big, old adults. I saw my first few rust colored snows that frequent far southern wintering grounds.
We were greeted with dry fields everywhere. This is quite the rare experience! We also found ourselves in massive dust storms from some incredible winds on Saturday, but that wind makes the hunt. We were debating about whether we would rather hunt mud, or dust. After every step in one field dust would fly into your face in the winds and really hard on the eyes, lungs and guns.
We found some juvies in certain areas and solid masses of adults elsewhere. The rumors are correct, not a lot of juvies this year. We managed to take 90 geese on this 4 day trip, and we were quite happy with it for the conditions and how this spring transpired.
Here’s a few pics. This was the only year we didn’t get a kill pic, but we were in a hurry to pack up for the long drive home.
There are plenty of snow geese left in ND, but you have to drive, hunt, drive, hunt, etc…it makes for a long trip employing/deploying a thousand decoys each day. That’s why I can only handle it once a year.
