Justin and I took the boys out for a quick duck hunt on Thanksgiving morning. We hit the Coon Hammond marsh at the Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge. We were the only vehicle in this area. It was cold (25F) with a nice 10 – 15 mph wind from the northwest, a perfect wind for the spot we used. We loaded our gear on to Justin’s modified deer cart and began our 1 mile hell walk. The boys took turns riding on the cart, while Justin and I pulled it along. The frozen ground actually helped, although the ruts and washouts were bad.
We set up with about a minute to spare, as the mallards were already flying. We dropped 3 green heads right of the bat and then things slowed down a lot. We added 2 teal and a spoonie. Kadon couldn’t feel his toes, so we wrapped it up and headed for turkey day dinner.
It was good to finally see (and shoot) decoying birds again, after our Wisconsin duck hunting season fiasco (no birds/shots the last 5 times out; we even skipped many weekend days – unheard of for our group, unless the water is frozen, and it is not).
