I hear you Lenny. I haven’t got the travel routes down by any means; but I got a pretty good idea why that 12 lb monster recently caught was through the ice and not up at the dam. Not to say there couldn’t be any 12 lb girls up at the dam right now; but I bet there is a heck of a lot more down in Pepin right now. And in a month or so……..

Most of the big girls caught on the lake don’t get talked about too much if you know what I mean.

Took my two son’s 9 & 6 to ND last Wed-Sun to do a little duck hunting and to visit their grandma. The cold and snowy weather they were having pushed alot of birds down and we had a great time.

Wed – got to the farm about 2:00, did a little pass shooting on a bigger lake for a couple of hours ended up with a mixed bag.

Thurs. – Mainly scouted because it was my first trip out this year. Found a bunch of mallards feeding in a pea field and then jumping into one of the few sloughs that weren’t frozen for a drink. Snuck down to the water to try and get my 9 year old a shot, two missed shots and we pulled out so we could hunt it the next morning.

Friday – Set up in the dark on the same water the mallards were feeding in the day before……….limited in about an hour, 15 mallards, a nice bull Can and Widgeon, and a decent Pintail.
Got back to the farm and the 9 year old(Sam) saw what he had missed that morning, it was game on.

My brother had noticed a flock of ducks at the end of the drive way that he thought were sneakable so my son and I snuck down as far as we could. When we stood up he took a shot and missed, I put another shell in his gun as fast has I could and told him to shoot again….BOOM the little 20 gauge went off again, when the “smoke” cleared there was a duck laying on it’s back in the water . He looked at me with the biggest grin I’ve seen out of him and the high fives, knuckles and hugs started. I think he’s hooked.

Sat. – Took it easy in the morning until Sam couldn’t take it anymore he wanted to shoot more ducks so we went out to a slough we had scouted a fews days prior that was full of ducks and geese for an afternoon hunt. We ended up with a mixed bag again that day and Sam shot a couple of Ruddy duck to top of the trip.

I forgot my camera in the truck on Saturday so I don’t have pictures from that shoot but I will add them when I get them from my neighbor.

My 6 year old Ben is wondering when he gets to shoot his first duck………I can’t wait.

First off, heck of a post!
Getting the boys in on the action is something you will never forget. My boy just dropped his first duck a few weeks ago, now it’s go time.

Secondly, I am extremely jealous. The amount and types of ducks in the Dakotas are incredible. For weeks we have seen nothing but woodies and teal on the river. I would really like to take a Dakotas waterfowl hunt someday.

Again, great post and those pics are some of the best

What a great post and awesome pictures spd800!

That last picture of you and your son is priceless!

What a great memory for the two of you. I have feeling that this hunt will be shared for years at future family gatherings.
