Even the best “spots” on the river don’t produce every year. Usually we see a bit of a cycle that can have a great spot in year 1 go fairly cold for a couple of years until all the key factors of water temp, water level, clarity and time of year align to put those fish back in the same key “spot on the spot” again. The ability to pick out key locations and fish those areas effectively are much more important than learning a good spot or two.

As far as those monster lake walleye go… next year I need to ask to borrow lakemaster’s hovercraft for the winter. It would be a heck of a lot of fun to get after those fish during that last month before ice out.

I would get BBB’s. You will be fine just shooting your mod. choke.

I am going out on a limb and guessing your doing a guided hunt from a goose pit?

If that is the case, BB or BBB with a modified or improved modified choke should do you just fine. I think most folks over choke. Those guys can call the birds into near finishing and give you best shots at 25-35 yards.
Even if your in a layout(coffin) field blind, this will still serve you well.

So, where you heading and what kind of set up are you going to be in????

i like to shoot #2s for geese. get yourself a box of the hevi metal or the hevi steel. these are usually about 20 bucks a box and work great for honkers. a mod is what i shot for years untill i got a pattermaster. it should suit you well

i’d go more pellets, so BB. #2s would work if you are good with your shotgun, and wont chew up ducks as much. if you are only shooting 3″s, id go mod or IM if you have it… i love my IM choke, i use it for everything cept turkeys. good luck, i cant wait to hear a rookies take on goose hunting!

Pat. I would recommend BB. I would also recommend buying any load that is 1500 FPS. Use a Improved cylinder and the pattern should be just fine. We will be shooting the birds close, no pass shooting. I would say under 25 yards or less.

I shoot a lot of 1’S. They pattern great and have a lot of knock down power for decoying birds. BB and BBB also for the last shot. I also shoot a Patternmaster choke.

Good luck and I hope we see you on the 31st.

I agree with Tim, go with the fast loads. It’s all about penetration!

Did I say that out loud?

Gut one other word of advice after doing some research with the subject (you) this past weekend. Don’t shoot them in the .

At least you will not have to walk through the same stuff we did this past weekend. Sitting in the blind/pit and let the geese come to you sounds like a better idea!
