Just hunted the Crex this weekend. Kind of cold to sleep in a tent with a leaky air mattress but a lot of fun.
Got there mid afternoon Friday. Meet Jim Evaard from Wisconsin Outdoor News volunteering at the visitor center. Helped us out a lot with some good hunting spot. Walked back outside just in time to talk to a local Warden, Again alot of good local info.
Woke up about 1:45 to answer the call of nature. No big deal. Walked out again around 5:00 am to about 1/2in snow. Nice but darn clear skis.
Got set up. Had a few flocks of teal come sizzle by without a chance to shot.
Biggest bummer came when by buddy called back a big flock of geese. Came in nice to our spread of duck decoys. We stood up about the time half of them were on the water. Could have jumped up and grapped a couple by the legs. But we were in the Burnett County Sub-Zone. Can not shot geese.
Got a couple snipe late in the morning.
Hunted the evening at Fish Lake. Drove around alot. Found a spot out of the wind. All the birds semmed to like the windy side of the lake. No luck.
Another cold night in the tent. Matress held air for about 2 hours.
Set up in a small protected cove early the next morning in Crex. Had one diver that most have been winged swim into the spread early. My buddy said you shoot when I stand up. Busted again. It most have been crippled since it just swam away. Could not bring myself to shot it off the water. Hindsight being 20/20 I should have since it never flew but just keep swimming around.
Had a lot of birds fly over. Finally had 2 gadwal land. We flushed them up and got one.
Then we had a flock of teal fly over. On the circle, Bob got a blue and green wing.
Shortly after, had a big group of snipe swing by. Fancy shooting by Bob. Took down two with one shoot.
Had to pack up early to get back home the spend some quality with the family Sunday afternoon.
Cold weekend to spend in the tent but meet a lot of good people and had a great time!!!
Water levels are decent except Monsoon Lake. No mallards yet but alot of nice teal, pintail, gads, and snipe.
Over all great weekend to be out!!
