A couple of buddies and I went to SD to hunt early season geese and had a blast! We shot 50 geese over 3 days for 5 hunters using layout blinds and full body decoys and some decent calling and flagging.
On Saturday we split up and hunted 2 fields. One group of 3 and the other field had 2 guys in it. I was in the 2 man group and we never fired a shot. We had a couple of flocks come close, but not finish and the group of 3 shot their 15 bird limit in short order.
We were in a chisel plowed wheat field and the geese did not want to finish. The other 3 were in a cut wheat and they were covered up with geese until they shot their 15. It sucks not pulling the trigger, but it was nice to be in the field watching birds and trying to solve the puzzle that would bring some birds into the decoys.
We spent the rest of the afternoon scouting and trying to obtain permission to hunt the fields that were holding geese. We secured a good spot for Sunday mornings hunt and headed back for supper after putting the geese to bed.
Sunday morning found us scrambling to get things set up in the pre dawn light. We finished in time to take a short rest in the layout blinds before the first birds were spotted on the horizon. We managed to get the first flocks of the morning to lock up and come to about 35-40 yards before sliding off to the side and not finishing in the pocket. We surveyed the situation and found that our blinds were not blended in enough and the birds were telling us. We blended in the best we could and started to have some birds work us. The first three pack bought our setup hook/line/sinker and were on the ground. We had another set of 3 come in and meet the same fate as the first 3. We ended up with 10 birds for the morning and then went on scouting for the field with the GOLD X on it.
We found the field we were looking for with about an hour left of daylight and then the work starts with trying to track down the land owner and obtaining permission. We were in luck and got ahold of the farmer. The farmer does not usually let people hunt as they hunt, but my buddy Jason talked him into hunting with us 3 Minnesotan’s that were left and the farmer and his 12 year old son agreed to meet us in the field at 5:00am on Monday morning.
We felt like we finally found the spot on the spot, but we weren’t sure until the birds started bombing in right after sunrise. We shot 25 geese in less than 25 minutes and the geese kept coming even as we were taking pictures. The farmers son was an excellent shot and was grinning from ear to ear as we were picking up the last birds to fill our 5 bird each limit. He said “I have never had geese that close”!
All in all it was a Great weekend with friends new and old as well as seeing what mother nature can do when she is left alone . There ducks and geese scattered across the sky, fields, and potholes as well as deer and pheasants .
