Headed down to Mizz last week and did something I said I would never do—Hunted near Squaw Creek. We shot 66 birds for 2 days of gunning. Looked at the count on Squaw and saw that there was 1.2 million there the last monday of march and looked again before we left and saw that the numbers dropped by more than a half. Apparrently the snow that moved in kicked the birds both to the north and the south. Day one was Wed. and that was mostly a set-up day as we barely even sat in our blinds but we did poke a lone Rossie. Thursday was a sunny 80 degree day with south winds, shot 35 birds, mostly in the p.m. Friday was a little different–north winds and sun, kind of sucked with the sun in our face all day long, but still managed to shoot 30 birds, saw about 1/4 of the birds we did on thursday probally due to the fact they were flying north over the hotel at night.
All in all a ton of birds seen, a lot of them were a mile high and didn’t even bat a wing over us, but the birds that did work us came down nicely as we landed a few birds and our shots were in the 15-30 yard range. about half and half on the adult to juvie ratio.
