Sound like a good time, anyone know of one closer to the Twin Cities?
Thanks
I have been giving it some thought about building my own rod. Sounds like a great time…..
A class like this would be awesome! Sadley map quest shows 323.63 miles away.
Class costs vary greatly depending on what blank the person decides to build with. The cost for the class itself is around $100 plus the blank chosen – the details should be discussed with me directly for the final cost. What I tell everyone is that for the cost you can build a middle of the road St. Croix or Loomis for about what they would cost you at the store AND you gain the knowledge to build additional rods for life as a bonus. If you decide to step up to the upper crust blanks you will actually build them for less than you can buy them at the store and they will be better built than they come from the factories. Plus the self satisfaction of making it yourself! Contact me if you want details. Chuckles
bump – getting close to the deadline guys… just a friendly reminder here… Chuckles
The deadline is the end of the workday on Thursday, Jan 31 – I do still have some openings, thanks for the PM’s folks… Chuckles
I agree with Chuckles. I have been building fly-rods and spinning rods for around ten years. It is very satisfying to catch fish with a rod that you have built. Plus with all of the components that are available you can create a rod to your specifications. The cost assessment is exactly as Chuckles has mentioned. I wish I could be there to meet a few other rod-builders, it would be a great opportunity to learn. Thanks for the heads up on the class.
Chuckles,
Hope you are getting good turn out for your class. I thought long and hard about signing up myself. With me living in the Quad-Cities it’s about 1.5 hour drive for me each way. With the way the weather has been, that could really be ify this time of year. Besides my job has me on the road alot and I would miss at least one of the weeks you are scheduling. If you decide to do this again, I am interested. I am the president of a local fishing club here in the Quad-Cities and might be interested in talking one on one with you about maybe doing a class here. If you might be interested I could pole my members and get a rough idea of how many would be interested to determine if it would be worth your time. Of course the club would compensate you for your expenses. Anyway if you might be interested let me know.
Good luck with your class…JohnnyB
Has anyone heard of how it’s been down there, and/or been down there and would like to share a little info, seeing how it’s not in MN.
Anything would help we’re heading to Niobrara this weekend.
I’ll make a couple call Lars. I have a group that heads down there a couple times a year.
I know the action was pretty hot a couple weeks ago around Springfield area. I can call some people and find out.
three of my buddies just got back this last weekend and got limits of green heads everyday. Said it was pretty good. Lots of birds they said.
Got back late yesterday. Bleak is one word to describe our hunt. We didn’t see that many birds but the ones we did see comitted suicide. We didn’t hunt Big Lake but apparently one guy said there was “thousands” of ducks, but they were all sitting on the ice, and “apparrently” never came up by us or never even flew.
I used the last of my SD license on suday and we shot 100 snows in a cornfield in 2 hours.
I’ll see what I can do about pics–I didn’t bring my camera to the field hunt because I thought it was cursed due to the 2 duck hunts I brought it on.
100 snows in 2 hrs…..jealous
Did you have bad weather? Or were they just stupid?
They have(had) a dusting of snow on the ground and on our way back from Neb. We did some half-a$$ed scouting and found the mother load for the area(about 50,000), got permission and set up in the corn field they were using. We set up 156 full bodies, which were right out of the box, and 40 TNT shells. The birds came off the roost one section away and instantly began working the field. A good wind had the sun at our backs and having the breakfast field worked as well. These birds were hungery and unmolested for some time. We didn’t take shots over 30 yards, no BS, the first snow flock of the new hunting year had my heart a racin’ as about 3 juvies touched down and a flock of about 50 followed. We shot about a 50/50 ratio of adults to juvies, as we even had the old birds touch down. The only bad thing is that we only had about 6 vollies of shooting because we would drop around 12 per.
They haven’t had the precip. that we have had, but they have had colder temps. But the fact that no one else hunts snows in the fall helps considerably.
Here’s a pic of the snows we took in SD of the great snow shoot.
I’m gonna …I LOVE hunting for the white birds….I think snow goose hunting is the best waterfowling…not to mention challenging…JMO
Birds are stacked in the basins right now! If you plan on hunting them here now is the time to do it.
