10 day forecast for “Up Nort” looks mighty chilly. Thought we might get some of the little stuff that froze early this week to open back up, but that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I would expect even the big lakes to lock up before next weekend.

WI southern zone is open thru Dec. 7th. I can guarantee they’ll be ice fishing around here by then!

If you’ve still got ducks on your mind, I would suggest hunting sooner rather than later

Most (or all) of the small stuff in the La Crosse area is completely open again.

Next week, likely a different story though!

I am going to hit it again this weekend for sure, actually starting tomorrow.
While running traps I have been in an area that has a pile of ducks using it right now. The biggest flock I seen come out of the rice was 75+ ( I couldn’t count them fast enough) of mallards. There are also a few widgeon and pintails in this area as well. So far, I have only seen 1 hunter in the area and they have been 200 yards away from where the ducks have been.
That is one nice thing about trapping, you get to go through a lot of areas and really notice where the birds are at

    Wats:

I knew you find something while trapping, er scouting. I am hoping our pre-Thanksgiving trip doesn’t get frozen out too bad, and I know the closing weekend with this weather might be looking like a freeze out again like last year. Last weekend last year had lots of mallards in the area, just couldn’t get a boat to ’em.

Boy, I tell ya, I just can’t win out there
The place I had picked out didn’t pan out today at all. First, the ducks were gone and then the area had at least 6 boats there.
I had to go farther down the slough and set-up. WHile I was there, I got to watch 2 other guys drop a 1 man limit right in front of me After they left, I moved over to their spot and only had 3 ducks come somewhat close to me I am beginning to think I stink
All I can figure is my boat blind is sticking out like a sore thumb. Who knows, but at least it was relaxing out there

I don’t know, I’ve had a few really awesome Decemeber hunts. I would risk one week in September for the one week gamble in Dec. Last year I looked it up, and it was about 40% of the time Dec is frozen out. I would take that gamble for a big-time late mallard hunt.

No later than current format though.

i agree 100 percent. i would trade a week of swatting skeeters to shoot some woodies and teal for a week in dec. i think its perfect the way it is. living on the river i could shoot ducks even after the season is closed here. i can see people who live in the middle of the states who just hunt ponds how they would miss out. but defnitally screw the teal and lets kill some fat mallards. watsa i see you live in hager? can you find any birds on the river?
