Shaley, Did you try a new plug? I had the same problem last year on our last trip. It was self caused, I brought the auger in to the ice house one night, it didn’t run the same the next day.

I would try the plug firt. Good Luck.

You also might want to check your gas cap and make sure its venting.I have had this happen to me and it sure sounds like the vent screw needs to be loosened

If it was outside in the cold bring it in and let it warm up really good.Is it getting fuel to the carb?Is the plug wet?Fuel filter pluged?Might just need the carb cleaned but If you ran it dry I suspect it isnt getting fuel.

Personally I dont like to run my carb dry.Gaskets will dry out and the aluminum will oxidize some.Doesnt mean you still wont end up with problems but I havnt had a problem yet.Ice augers and snowmobiles are notorious for carb problems as they sit for 9 months and get used for 3.

If plug is dry pull the plug and pour in a dab of fuel.Replace plug and start.Sometimes this is enough to get the fuel flowing.

Well it starts then dies so yes its getting fuel. its inside where its warm now awaiting a new recoil spring and plug. I did get a hint of varnish after I got it in the basement thats why I’m thinking bad fuel, but not sure where it would have came from.

Could you have gotten some condensation in the tank and lines. I’m wondering water in the lines.

Your story sounds to familiar…I just went through it with my eskimo the other day…almost exact, right down to the recoil rope breaking! Eesh! Fixed the rope, pulled the air filter and sprayed fuel straight into the carb. After starting/dying 3-4 times it fire right up and ran like a champ. I go through this every year, well not the rope breaking but the spraying fuel into the carb to get her going. Once I do this it’s great for the entire season…till the next fall/winter when I go to fire her up after sitting empty for the summer.

In the process of fixing the rope I was attacked by the coil spring, in the process of recoiling it it broke in the last 6″ looked like it had been heated with a torch it just snapped. Thats when I got a little po’ed and threw the spring in the trash and oredered a new recoil kit. So now when it gets here hopefully I can get it back together and try and get it running right so Saturday I don’t have to crank holes by hand.

try a carb kit. sounds like you need a new diaphram in the carb. with all the chemicals in the gas these days, the rubber doesn’t last. you can try spraying carb cleaner in the carb first, the needle valves might be pluge…………….tom fellegy.

Maybe you just gotta get to know it again

I fairly certain, mine once it pops off with the choke full on(then usually dies) then next time I pull the rope, the choke needs to be fully off.

Though it sounds like you may have a fuel issue, I always run a little seafoam in mine too, cleans it up, stabilizes the fuel.

It is a fuel issue. Check your pickup in the tank there should be a filter on the end of it. Many times the diaphram that is the fuel pump gets dry and hard or the little balls get stuck so it won`t pump fuel. Some times once fuel is flowing through it after trying to start it a few times it softens up enough to run. 99% of the time an enigne starts and only runs with the choke on it is fuel related. Something is not providing enough fuel to the engine to keep it running with the choke off. The choke being on creates a huge vacuum sucking fuel hard enough through either the blockage or weak fuel pump.

Allso check for hard fuel lines. If they are hard they will leak air and not provide enough fuel to the carb.

It seems that every season when you first try to start them they start hard. What I have found is that if you put gas in them and even just pull the rope a few times and then just let it sit for a few hours. Then later give it a pull and off to cutting holes.

Alright guys let’s hear how your weekend was?

I had high hopes of getting out this weekend however with an 8 month old who is teething and has a cold at the same time I couldn’t bring my self to get out of bed yesterday after a sleepless night. So I have to live through the stories from you guys this week.

    So how was it?

In the Albany and Upsala area I would have to say the opener was poor. Saturday was bluebird skies and Sunday was wet skies.

We ended up with a paltry 3 Mallards in the bag. We did allow quite a few birds to come in and leave the decoys unscathed, however.

I spoke to some store owners in Grey Eagle on Sunday who gave the same overall result of fair to poor for that area as well.

I hunted south of St. Cloud with my brother and two friends on Saturday and it was one of the slowest openers that we have had in long while ? We shot 2 drake mallards all morning. One of the mallards was about 85% fully colored with 3 curls and red legs , while the other was trying to camo himself as a hen . Both birds worked well to the calls and came from the only area that they could and not be shot at on their approach. We had WAY to much competetion on the lake we hunted. We saw quite a few ducks before 9:00 as well as a TON of geese, but the were nowhere to be seen after the season opened.
On Sunday I went out by myself and took out my 11 year old chocolate lab, Loomis. We went to a lake that we normallly do well on teal and woodducks, but we hunted til 10:00 and only had 2 woodducks and 3 geese decoy all morning. The woodducks were in the first 5 minutes and both of them landed within 10 yards of the blind and almost hit me when I jumped them to shoot, as their escape was to fly right over my head and came within a couple of feet. The dog and I sat til almost 10:00 and the only thing that saved the hunt was 3 honkers that decoyed as I was unloading the gun. I had just taken both shells out of my Citori and I look up to see 3 geese flying my way. I throw the shells back in and give one honk on the goose call and they lock up and come right in. I hit the goose in the butt with the first shot and miss with the second, but he keeps on flying only to turn and come back around as he was hurting. I grabbed another shell in time to finish the bird and the rest was up to Loomis. She has retrieved alot of birds over the last 11 years , but her left hip is bad and she can’t do what she used to . She made a nice retrieve and we headed out to pick up decoys. I saw only 15 ducks all morning and around 50 geese. The only good thing is that season is on and it can only get better .
I hope the rest of you had safe and enjoyable hunts .
I can not wait til next weekend to try again .

The duck “shooting” pretty much stunk

I did not go, but I heard quite a bit of shooting, just south of the cabin… that would be the eastside of Mille Lacs, east of Hunters Point… I would guess people sitting on Petersons Creek.

Average for us. Woodies and teal were abundant Saturday. 5 of us got our wood ducks and 7-8 teal. Sunday was wet! Quick action for the first 1/2 or so, then completely dead. Think we ended up with 10 birds or so, with some poor shooting.

Took yesterday off because I’m usually able to find some local mallards that were moved around opening weekend….unfortunately, there just weren’t any this year. Settled for a pot hole with 150 woodies using it…..banged my 3 nice drakes quickly….and spent the rest of the day fishin.

Bird numbers seem way down at this point…..not expecting much for the next couple weeks. Wish the water would come up about 5 feet!

I did not make it out Saturday but hunted in the rain Sunday morning with my son. I shot 3 woodies except one floated into the open water and while I was waiting to retrieve it an eagle snatched it up! My son said it was really cool and he wished he had a video camera. I was not so impressed at first but it was cool to see. I told him this is why we use steel shot… Ended the wet morning with 2 woodies. Then I got home to see the dog ripped up my yard, I guess he was pissed that I did not take him along

I second that. But we were able to get into a few Mallards on Sunday.

I only have a few minutes today. I’ll try to get on tommorow or friday with a full update. We did a bunch of scouting between Stcloud and Ottertail.

    Have a great week boys.
