Well the 2008 Youth Duck hunt started with a bang!!!!! My good friend Jeff and I took my son Andrew, my nephew Mitch and their good friend Chandler out for the hunt. My son had me up at 5:03 ……DAD …..DAD get up we have to pick up Mitch and Chan by 5:30. So up I was and off we were. We made in time to pick up the boyz and meet Jeff by 5:45. We loaded up the gear and off we went on our long walk through the itch weeds……I was off track a little and we had to cross some water that we should not have had to but……( boy its dark in the woods at that time….hard to keep the bearings straight with no path established yet.) Unfortunately Mitch didn’t make it across without falling over and getting all muddy and wet before we even made it to the blind. We made it to the blind finally and we set the decoys as the Wood Ducks started filing in. It didn’t take my son Andrew long to bag his first Drake Wood duck for the season, followed shortly by Mitch and Chan. We saw lot of Wood ducks a few Teal and a few Mallards. We managed to turn thee of the mallards around and they set the wings and dropped on the spread. All three boyZ took aim and all shot about the same time. One of them connected and down she tumbled a nice hen Mallard. What a hoot watching these three boy swinging on these fast flying, tight action woodies. They ended the morning with 6 drake wood ducks 3 hen woodies and 1 hen mallard. We also saw a lot of geese, the boyZ managed to squeeze a few shots off at a low flying flock but were unable to connect on the hunt. Can’t wait till morning to try it all over again………Bring on the rain dance guys we could use a little water out there!!!!!
