The MN DNR News Release talks about the migrating diver ducks greatest friend Winterkill. With winterkill happening seldomly over the past 10 years, fish have been able to exact a tremendous toll on the invertebrates that feed hungry waterfowl in spring and fall. From walleye and muskie fingerlings stocked by our ill-advised MN DNR, to the pesky fathead minnow, they all are an evil in our shallow water basins and ponds.
I am hopeful that with the little help from Mother Nature’s nasty 07-08 winter, and some great invertebrate stocking efforts this spring, we may start to see a turn-around in the declining populations of diver ducks in and through MN.
