Instead of hijacking another post, I’ll put this here.

I bought a new gun 2 years ago and love it. Have never shot so well. It is a Winchester Super X2. This gun comes with Invector-Plus choke tube system.

As was mentioned in another post, Patternmaster is a preference of many goose hunters. Can someone explain the difference in choke tube systems and would it pay to change from Invector Plus to Patternmaster? I’m not well versed in these at all.

    Thanks, Eric

Eric. A Pattermaster has extended porting and 5 lugs inside tube to grab the wad and slow it down to let all the shot come out of the cup without stringers. Makes for a very tight pattern. Invector chokes are smooth and just restrict the shot for tighter patterns. Remember, if using BB, BBB, T’s or any shot that is 1500 FPS or faster, improved cylinder chokes. If you shoot the bigger steel with a full choke, you could crack your barrel.

Here’s a link to what they look like.

Patternmaster chokes make for a shorter and DENSER shot string. What that means is that when you hit the bird it is with more pellets resulting in cleaner kills. I started using a Patternmaster in the late 90’s when I was living in ND and taking people out hunting. I had a client say that it was like an Indy car blowing its engine every time I shot a bird. I know my lab was happier as she did not have to chase down near as many cripples It is worth the investment! 690reece

I picked up an X2 with The PM extended choke and have KILLED more fowl this year then any other, it is amazing and effective! Cabelas price is 40 bucks cheaper then Gander??? Gander matched the Cabelas price though. Good Luck in your decision, I will never hunt without one again!

Someone correct me if i am wrong, but don’t choke tubes actually perform by restricting or allowing the amount of air and force to blow through the shot spread. I know pattern masters also slow the wad, but i believe air/force flow control is the main principle?

Fear. The restriction in choke tubes were ment more for lead shot. As the shot would come out of say a full choke, which is very restricted, it would small together and hold a tighter pattern out further. Steel is hard and actually bounces off itself as it goes through a choke tube. That is why the more open chokes work better for steel.
