Alright, i’ve tried everything. I can’t seem to keep my decoys from getting the line and weights tangled…. I bought the weights that wrap around the keel, they just fall off when in my bag. I tried tying the weights to shower curtain clips then just cliping them to the decoys when placing the dekes out. That worked good but the clips would sometimes come open and i’d lose weights or a decoy would drift off.

Does anyone have a good way to store them, tangle free? I’ve got a dozen Final Approach mallards and a dozen Greenhead Gear Hot Buys and the weights just don’t like to stay wrapped around the keel. Thanks in advance!

Wrap the weights around the dekes neck. I haven’t had one of those come off…..ever. Its physically not possible.

Wrap the line around the keel until you have just enough left to get the weight to wrap around the dekes neck.

    Should be good to go………

Another option for wrapping is doing a figure 8 around the neck across the back under the tail and back around the neck so the cord crosses on the top of the back of the decoy…then when you get to the end wrap the weight around the neck.
Wrap them snug like that and they won’t get tangled.

These are very hard to rig because there isn’t much room between the keel and body AND the head is too close to the body to allow you to wrap around the neck.

Have you seen these weights I have pictured?

Tangle free line on all decoys and strap weights wrapped around the head seem to work for me. I can’t stand sitting in the boat with ice cold hands and having to struggle untangling lines.

i like the ace decoy weights better than the ghg ones. the ghg ones dont have a thing enough cord and they break all the time. the ace weights have a thick rubber cord. ive had some for three years and they havent broken yet. some of the ghg ones i bought this year have already snapped

Very easy is an understatement. If you mainly hunt shallow water, these are the way to go.

as someone noted, the ‘hot buys’ basically have no neck, and wrapping around it is an impossibility. i just picked up 2 dozen, and think the sleeve shaped weights that fit on the beak is a good way to go.

I use the tangle free cord and weights. I just wrap the cord around the keel, and let the weights hang loose.I haven’t had one tangle in three years.

    EXACTLY!!

I have the tangle free weights/and line on about 6 dozen puddlers–wrap the tangle free line around and let the weight hang and drop in a drake stand up bag I also have 4 dozen puddlers on decoy spreaders and they are very fast to pick up and set out when running huge sets I spend to much $ on decoys to wrap a weight around the head and chip/mar the paint. I agree that for my dekes, this is the only secure speed wrap
The only twist that I would emphasize, is that I make sure to use tanglefree cord beacause it does not absorb water.
Conventional decoy cords do actually absorb water, thus, if you wrap them tight and as the cord dries out, the cord shrinks. I have deformed many decoys over the years this way. We even had a few tails on our cork decoys crack because of the force from shrinking cords!
The other thing that I like to do, is buy exclusively dekes with turnable heads. Regardless of which weight I use, I make sure it is coated, ie. pvc or rubber dipped!
I measure out my cords, so after so many figure 8 back wraps, the weight is tied on just beyond where most people would tie them, so they could be wrapped around the neck. Instead, I do not wrap the anchor around anything. I just turn the head around instead, to secure my figure 8 back wraps from coming undone
    Good luck
    cheers

The cords are like a rubberized PVC.
They just are not limp/flexible enough to knot.
Very affordable, try it and see what you think.
    Good luck

Thanks Switchback. That is an idea I’ll have to incorporate. Looks a lot more economical than some of these fancy anchors and lines.

I use tanglefree also. I dont use the tanglefree weights, I use normal strap weights.

When its cold out, I am well known just to scoop my decoys with a hook, and pile them all in the boat and “deal with it later”.

Later = at the access or the next day with sometimes over 100 decoys. I have NEVER had a knot. It might take a bit to get the decoys out one at a time, but they always come apart.

Tangle Free is the only way to go for decoy cord. They have it in bulk spools at fleet farm cheap.
