Got an email from my dad today…there was an article in the Trib yesterday about bluebills being killed by a parasite on Winni.
    http://www.startribune.com/outdoors/story/1533319.html

It is so sad to hear stuff like this….they are already a struggling breed of duck then to have one more thing killing them.

I grew up hunting bills on Winni with my dad…so many good memories of skies filled with them.
There isn’t anything better than a big flock of bills diving on to a lake wind howling in their wings, banking as one like they are all connected, hookin the line and barreling in on you.

Sounds like they should have open season on Winni. If hunters are able to take all they want, it won’t take long for the birds to keep heading South with all the hunting pressure.

We’ve had them (tremotote parasite) down here on the Miss for I would guess at least 4 years now. Birds turn up dead every spring and fall. Mostly coots and bluebills, with a few others sporadically mixed in.

As soon as the parasite hits the swans and eagles we’ll see some resolution…otherwise “there is nothing we can do about it”!

It’s nothing to see a 200 birds dead on Lake Onalaska right now.

Very sad to read about this. Anyone know where this parasite came from to begin with?
