Hey bud the guys are more than willing to help out a fellow duck killer but I think it might be a little easier if you let us know what it is your looking to do? Goose hunt? Duck hunt? Killing bills??? Settimg Decoys???

And what you have for Gear…………….

A good starter kit for me is; (Assuming you have a gun )

    1. Dececnt MAllard deeks (24)
    2. Blue Bills for late season (24)
    3. Robo Duck
    4. Good Calls i.e Folies key to these is practice, practice, PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!! if the calls are not workin put them away!!!!!

Depending on where your from ( I dont hunt with cheeseheads ) and how willing you are to drive I could take you out…………….

Well I have a gun and shells but that is about it… I need to know what deeks to buy and how to set them for late season pothole hunting. I will be hunting mostly mallards and other puddlers. I do have a few cheep calls and kinda know what to do with them, but still working so what I want to know is how to set small water deeks and how to really step up my calling. I will also try to hunt close to the metro…were I live.

Depending on the size of the pothole I would say that a dozen is going to be enough. Just remember late season potholes can freeze up quick! Then you gotta head to bigger deeper water.

When you start tossing deeks. I look for 2 things.

    1. Which way is the wind blowing?

    2. Where do I want to shoot em?

For starters I would hunt with the wind to your back! You can hunt cross winds with really great success but that’s another story……….

Set your deeks out in front of you in a pocket. If your only hunting (Small?) potholes I dont think it matters how you set them as long as they are set.

For your duck calling click here Duck Calling

    Goose calling

    Honker calling

And something to get the blood pumping Click here

You might want to invest in a pair of Waders………….if you have not already.

If you are looking for some great beginers tips on calling I would look for This package . Or at least the straight talk CD that’s included in it. Fantastic instructional CD I Just started my calling this year but have been able to call my share of birds in because of it.
I think IDA should have a little duck and goose instructional set. I think we have the guys to do it.

A couple of things I would add.

    1) ducks do NOT like to land while going over land, I mean while setting up, your keep the landing pattern (against the wind) over water.

    2) primos calls have some good calls with a DVD on calling ducks and geese (both on the same DVD)

    GOOD LUCK
