had an ok year this year. lots of birds around but they had been around the block a few times. first 3 days we field hunted with ok results few geese an mallards each time out. last day found a pond with a few thousand birds in it and had a hay day. in the middle of the day we shot some blues and some sandhills. girlfriend also shot her first pintail and it was a perfect one but without a sprig.

In Wisconsin you’d be going to jail for shooting those cranes. I don’t see the logic in making us protect them so every other State can kill them. Its the same argument they used for years about mourning doves. They tell us they are a protected species. Protected until they fly out of Wisconsin!

I don’t know what I’d do with a crane if I shot one, but I’d like to have the choice.

Don’t you love our politically run DNR here in Wisconsin!

We shot a few Sandhills over the years in North Dakota and they are definitely good eating! Great pictures!!! Sounds like it was a good trip but most trips to North Dakota are.

Talked to a guy from Oklahoma at a gas station in Manitoba that said “cranes were better eating than ribeye” so it seems to fit what you are saying here.

    2 things…

    – I have heard those Cranes eat very well! Legal in NoDak.

    – Have your taxidermy man ad a sprig feather to that Pintail if you are concerned about the mount. A pintail in the northern states this time of year with sprig feathers is super, super rare. That kind of plumage is much more common south of here. Congrats on the Pintail!!!
