Alright guys here is the deal my buddy and I have been puddle hoping so far this year with little luck. However he stumbled upon his decoys last week that he “lost” in the move. So I figured since we always hunt together I would be the sucker that bought the calls and spent the time on it.

So about a week ago that’s just what I did, and I have been practicing EVERY night for 3-4 hours a night. I feel like I’m getting huntable with it. ( keep in mind my goal is to call ducks not win a duck calling title ) However the wife refuses to listen to my Hail call, mating call, and comeback call. Something about they are too loud. blah blah blah… However I scared the living daylights out of her when I gave an unexpected quack while she was letting the dog out she claims she swore I was a duck. Secondly I have tested the Hail call in my back yard twice and have had one flock of 7 land in the pond with in 3 min of giving the call. (dumb luck who knows?)

Anyways the point of all this is the following. How dumb am I for trying this all out in the field this weekend when we head out? Again I’m not claiming to be a Pro by any means. I just want to know how likely it is that I’m as huntable as I think I am? So let’s hear it.

well in my opinion, I think that if you are ready to go out and hunt, you can blow on your calls as long and as loud as you want. if you want to practice more, you can start going to fields in the summer where the ducks and geese start to gather and blow the calls at them from inside of the truck or car. if they start to talk back to you, then you have something. you can also hear what they sound like when you have other birds in air when they are talking. that is what I have done, I am no where near a pro at it either, but I can sure make em turn around or take a second look at the decoys.

dido shane on goin out to em in the summer and practicing! the way i figure you are not gonna learn what the ducks want to hear sitting in the house! get out there and see how good you are if they dont like it you can switch it up i personally think thats the only way someone gets better at it is in the field with decoys and sum birds! good luck

Find a reserve somehwere and listen to what the Susies are doing, and do that. Scrap your highball unless the birds are about a mile away, and forget the comeback too, in my opinion………… Your feeder and two-three note sequences are where you’ll make your money.

Give it a crack this weekend. If the birds don;t respond the way you want put the thing away. There are many time I’ve seen the best callers I know put the calls down because the birds won;t have it. I guess what i’m attempting to says it, “Watch the birds, they’ll tell you what they want.”

Good luck. Learning is half the fun.
