Does anybody have any reports spanning from Menahga, Bemidji, Longville, or Walker area. I think Shoot ‘n Release and I are going to do a little flyway highway adventure this weekend in search of bigger ducks.

Any reports from Thief Lake area. Have ambition, will travel.

We found a fair amount of woodies this weekend…..but not much else (2 teal and a merganser)….But that’s usual for our opening weekend area as we try and get away from people.

Got out and made quick work of things this morning….birds seem to really have settled down from the weekend (even responding to calls)…..I was done by 7:08 (32 mins)…didn’t feel like waiting around for another woody.

    GAWD I LOVE DUCK SEASON!!!!

I’m Back from ND! The hunting was great and the numbers looked REALLY good. There should be a full report tommoroew AM when I get a chance to catch up in the office. Just a little touch for now. We hunted around woodworth and shot full bags every day! The water is High in all slooughs we hunted and the geese and Cranes are thick in that area. More details tommorow.

Shoot and I just got back from a weekend in the Menahga – Nimrod area. There was not a flurry of activity up there, but managed a couple mallards. I thought the Ringers would be hot and heavy this past weekend, but we only saw one group of 6. There were still a hand full of teal and woodies up there as well.

In the fog Saturday morning we set a larger spread of around 3 doz mallards, 3 doz bills, and two geese. It was a pain that morning with the gear, decoys, dog, Shoot, myself all crammed into an Otter 1200. Sunday morning I had higher hopes since the fog had cleared, there were some rain showers moving in, and the mojos were finally legal. Sunday’s spread was a bit smaller with 2 doz bills, 1 doz mallards, and two mojos. It was a bit more manageable in the boat.

All of the birds that we cleaned had virtually no layer of yellow fat around the breast and the drakes were eclipsed.

We need cooler weather from the north!!

Looking at the MNDNR waterfowl migration report it looks as though some geese are begining to move. They have reported Canadiens and snows moving in to Norther MN. That included Grand Rapids. Hopefully we will see a few ducks mov in with the teal and woddies that will leave this week due to colder weather.

But I agree with MM. We need some serious cold in Canada.

It sounds like they had snow in Northern MN last night. Lets hope Canada saw that same.

3 TO 4 INCHES IN BEMIDJI!!!!! without a cold kick behind it though i feel it might just kick out the teal and woddies! Starting to see a few divers down here the last 2 days ricknecks, buffles, and a hen can thrown in the mix for us.

On the drive from Montrose to MPL this morning I notice a number of larger flocks of Mallards. All flocks looked to have 10 or more birds. This is a change from the small groups flying the past two weeks. I will conduct a better scout on the way home to see if we have any fresh birds. I would have to believe that the cool weather and NW winds blew a few new ducks into town. (Hopefuly the stick around until sat.)

    Hey guys,
Sorry I have been out of touch for awhile.
It sounds like the teal and woodies did kick out of the Bemidji area, in relatively large numbers, with the snow this past week. It does not sound like they went too far.
Some larger numbers have shown up now in the cenrtal parts of the state.
Openner was, in my opinion, not worth discussing on this post/forum, simply because it was so wide spread as usual.
In the brainerd/Hackensack area, we shot about 20-30 birds for 8 hunters. No better and no worse than most other openners.
Late last week, I did fit in a hunt in the Cass Lake area. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of resident ringnecks. For a simple morning hunt, 2 of us bagged 3 mallards, 2 teal and 5 ringnecks.
Yesterday I got a call from a buddy in the New Prague/Faribault area stating that their openner was awsome and things seem to have disappeared for now.
I also spoke to some folks that are puzzled at the number of lesser canadians that are showing up in Rochester already. MM or one of the other guys from that area will probably have more solid input on that topic.
Geese seem to definitely be appearing flocked up in much larger numbers this week, regardless of location.
The cormorants seem to finally be leaving too.
As it stands right now, I do not plan to hunt again until the weekend of Oct. 27-28, and I do not anticipate much change in flight activity before then.
I’m already pumped for November though. When the migration hits, I will be following the divers and northern mallards
BTW, I am interested in picking up more herters diver decoys, if anyone is liquidating
    Good luck
    cheers

Drake. You are correct in the number of lessors around Rochester. We had a lot of flocks work us last weekend and shot about half dozen of them. Bring on the cold and snow up north!

    Jake:

What part of ND will you be hunting? I’ll be up north around J. Clark refuge. Leaving Wednesday night.

Yo Drake…That mutual friend of ours (the one with the big nose …) has dozens of Herters Bills that are in tip-top shape and they are collecting dust. You may want to make him an offer
Sturg and I and 4 others are bound for the Northeastern part of SD on the 26th Gitty up for some big water divers up there RR
