Low water and Ducks??

Spent the day Sunday checkin out my duck killin and early ice spots around the Forest Lake and Scandia area. It is no big secret that our lakes are in bad shape and some of the spots that I personaly hunt are in really rough shape.

I was wondering how you guys think this will affect our duck killin this year?

I am a little worried that some of my go to spots are not going to have enough cover.

The other thing I am worried about is that some spots we hunt are extermly low! We use alot of creeks to get out to little potholes and bigger bodies of water that not to many people without the drive and canoes can use.

So what the heck can a guy do?

    Anybody else nervous?

I know that Minnesota had fair to poor waterfowl production this year. But the surveys showed areas in canada further north on the flyway did well. I think it may be slower than previous years until the canadian birds start to move through.

I’ve already made the transition. Were heading to ND for 2 weeks and Manitoba for a week. I probably won’t hunt MN ducks this year. (With the exception of late season on the river.) Although that would require restraint when I’m in town and I’m not very good at that.

Thanks for the update Collin. I have land I hunt up on hwy 95 near taylors falls and was wondering how the water situation is. I was there a few weeks ago and the neighboring land was very dry but luckily our 2 ponds and stream exit is blocked off by the beaver and spring fed so it looked alright and held birds. It makes me nervous though cause the neighboring land was always the roosting spots and ours was the feeding area I hope they don’t make the 4 mile fly to the St croix instead now.

Jake’s professional waterfowler tip of the day….. Layout blinds aren’t only for cornfields!!!

We used them a couple times last year in low water spots……and the results were pretty decent . These spots would have been literally unhuntable if you were to try and sit on a bucket and hide in the natural cover…..just grass the blinds real well and lay them right on the edge of the water. They might get a “little” muddy, but isn’t that what duck huntin is all about?

I was just going to post that Jake. They can be very useful in low water. When the water has been low for as long as it has been this year there is plenty of low cover to hide a layout blind. I suggest using the type with a sled bottom to keep you a bit drier when next to water in the mud.

As far as getting to the spots……run the boat as far as you can and ditch it. Just like last year.
