Anyone attend the Public hearing 2-3 weeks ago on the proposed sale of the Gordy Yeager Wildlife area, which is near the Olmsted County incinerator? I miised the 2nd meeting and wondered if anyone could update me. I heard there were only a handful of people there. Also if you hunt the east and NE side of the refuge this could affect you

August 2, 2007 at 8:33 pm #33452Why would the guides around Rochester really care if they minimize the public hunting areas around Rochester and extend the refuge line in the area of the management area. It would be a bonus since they are hunting leased fields.
They are then going to use the profits from the sale of the land to purchase nearly twice as many acres of land for the public. I see it as a win, win for most guys.

August 3, 2007 at 1:02 pm #33482Mr mat03z. Hide behind your screen name so no one knows who you are. You have been taking shots at me and ALL the guides in and around Rochester the last two falls. I for one am tied of it and will not reply to you any longer. You are not worth my time or effort.
I am a sportsman and conservationist. I do what I can to support ALL sportsman and the wildlife! You are quick to judge without knowing someone.
If you would like to contact me and we could get together and discuss goose hunting, size of geese, bass fishing and anything else that might come up. Feel free! I live close to you and we could meet for a !

August 3, 2007 at 2:07 pm #33491First of all Im not hiding from anything or anyone. And for someone who is supposed to care about the Rochester area goose hunting you sure dont come across that way. Your comment about I dont hunt the East or Ne side of town indicates you dont care because it doesnt affect you. And I really dont care to have a beer with someone that has an attitude like that. August 3, 2007 at 2:26 pm #33493That’s your choice Cory. I do care about what happens in the area. The reason I said that was because it is not going to matter. I have benn through more with the DNR over river hunting and fishing changes in the last couple of years to know that you are not going to change what they have in mind!
If you remember the issue’s with changing the river refuges, I made it to the meetings, sent emails and wrote letters to help fight the changes even though I do not hunt down there anymore. Just another voice. Second, If you were to notice, Rochester and the surrounding community is going more and more and with that, we are going to loose some MORE of our hunting land and refuges. I do not believe IMO that we are loosing that much on the east. It does concern me about loosing any hunting land around here or anywhere, but with the groth of the towns, there is nothing we can do. Just my opinion and you and everyone else will have your own opinion.
The offer still stands to get together. I do not know you and you do not know me. I appolgize for my comments to you with out meeting and talking to you in person. Hopefully we could get together and come to an understanding. If you wish not to, then so be it. Have a good hunting season!

August 3, 2007 at 2:53 pm #33495Finally I think we can respect each others opinions.I for one do not want to befriend any Fellow Hunter or Fisherman. There are enough wacko antis out there and I believe us Sportman should stick together. With that being said it doesnt mean we cant have different opinions. And I dont know where this ribbing turned into a pissing match. But I for one would like to bury the hatchet and move on with the issues that are at hand. One of my concerns is that the DNR is saying that they are doing this for the good of the geese. I know better. The County is forcing he DNR out of its Gordy Yeager Area and I dont know if the plan is a good one or not.But I dont want to just sit back and throw my hands up and say well you cant fight the DNR.

August 3, 2007 at 3:01 pm #33496After seeing what the DNR and USFWS did to the river with all the input from the sprotsman and women that were at all of the meetings and sent emails and letter, there is not much chance here. The town is growing and that is forcing the DNR to move the food plots. I believe that there is enough food source for the geese right now and the numbers of geese are at an all time high. They should not be worried about finding a new food plot/ source area for them. If the weather gets bad and things freeze, let them go south. The guys down there need to hunt also!

August 3, 2007 at 3:12 pm #33497I personally feel that it is going to based on a business decision with the county. They are sitting on a gold mine for property. It is just a matter of time before the management land gets surrounded by the city. If it were to be held onto, it probably would be turned into a city park in the future. At least if they were to sell the land for huge profits, the money could then be used for additional acreage for the sportmen in another location. I see it more as a change than a loss. As far as I was aware the refuge line would then only extend into the Gordy Yeager management area. It wouldn’t effect much of the other boundaries around the area.
To add another subject to the topic, I don’t think I would be too against the road side blinds around the refuge being eliminated. Some mornings I drive by the blinds during the season and I see a lot of skybusting going on. Some really bad stuff too. I personally feel that these blinds educate the birds and make a lot of cripples. What do you guys think? One morning I decided that I was going to try one of the roadside pits. I stopped my truck, set my gun in the blind, walked my dog on a leash in there. After sitting there for about 1 minute, I could see the dissapointment in my dogs face and I left. I just couldn’t sit in a ditch next to a blacktop road and skybust geese all morning.

August 3, 2007 at 3:23 pm #33498I agree with the statement that the geese dont need anymore refuge. My concern is exactly that.A huge goose refuge right next to a Large resevoir.(Silver Creek) with hay and grassy loafing areas. My fear is the geese may rarely leave this safe haven, and go outside the refuge to feed especalily when the hunting pressure is strong. But also it could really screw up the late season hunt if most of the birds leave because of cold/snow.And then this refuge would or could possibly keep the birds in the area longer.

August 3, 2007 at 3:46 pm #33499I think geese will stage there and most so on warm days. They will still get up and fly in some direction to stretch there wings and feed out outside there comfort zone. Otherwise they would never leave Silver Lake. The good part may be that they have another big staging are that they feel safe in on the east side and that could inprove hunting out there.

August 3, 2007 at 5:45 pm #33506Agreed they will roam and stretch their wings somewhat. But the main reason they leave Silver lake is to FEED.The open water and security are the 2 main reasons for congragating at the lake. They ,at least with cold weather and snow cover, need to leave to find Grains to feed on. There will not be this dilema at Silver Creek because the food plots are right there.

August 4, 2007 at 2:34 am #33521I am not much of a waterfowl hunter so I am no expert by any means, and I am not familiar with the east side line but if it is anything like the north side (55th ST) I can see why they are looking at moving the line, like Tim said Rochester is growing and it will not be long before Rochester grows past these lines. Anyone know if they are also looking at moving the line on the north side? About 50 years ago my Dad almost bought the farm on the north side of the 55th ST line but my Mom did not like the house
Man how sweet it would have been to have that property in the family.
