Snow Goose Migration Report

Where are all the white geese at?

With all this snow, I am afraid we may have a short window in the Dakotas. I’ve been searching around for some number reports, but haven’t had much luck. Has anyone found any information. I have been on the phone with guys in Nebraska and South Dakota and the only thing they have really seen were some swans. The geese can’t be far away, but where????

I am tenatively planning a road trip around St.Patties weekend, but am a little nervous I may be too late.

How are the Mo. boys doing?

Talked to my wife’s cousin that guides in SW Nebraska last night. They are starting to show up on the Platte River and south. We have numerous Canada’s and ducks showing up here in NE Nebraska. But… I think they have turned around if smart!

I’m heading to SW Iowa next week, the word I’m getting is they are piled up in mid MO right now. A group left today after the guide called. The DNR reports don’t have many birds over the Iowa boarder yet, but the end of the storms next week should let us see some of the white tornados soon.

MO and Southern Nebraska are gonna be covered up in snows this week for sure!!!

Check the 10 day weather…..what ever amount of snow they got down there the last couple days will be gone by Mon-Tues with highs near 50….and it only gets warmer from there.

They’re so far behind this year I would expect them to push hard over the next week…..call me an optimist, but we’re still planing on killing birds in South Dakota next weekend!!! Can’t wait!!!

I got some buddy’s in Central MIZZ. right now but haven’t heard from them. But I do have a guy who works for me that is guiding right now for Top Gun. The word earlier in the week was that there was more decoys and spreads than actual birds in the area, but obviously in the spring 2 hours will make a hell of a difference. The one thing that gets me is that there is still 5-9 inches of ice on the area ponds and lakes, that will still take a while to melt. And with the growing pressure from hunters I would think that the sheet water fields would get spreads instead of roosting birds. They must be roosting on the ice. I’m headin down on tues. and will be back on friday.

In my opinion the snow is nothing but a good thing if you plan on hunting the Dakotas, it will stop the birds fom spreading out and keep them at a halt for a while. I remember the first year the hunt was started, there was a defenite snow line in ND and we pounded the birds for three straight days. A couple of years ago there was no snow but a lot of birds and they were so spread out it was tough to hunt them. I believe it will also give guys more time to take them out because of the slower migration period the snow gives them.

Ain’t gonna be that hard…..50 deg temps will put a hurt on it in a hurry.

Snow melts fast in the spring……granted there will still likely be lots of birds in SW Iowa in 2 weeks….but call your farmer friend on Thursday and I bet he’s got bare ground and snow geese.

Doubting it because the frost is still about a foot thick down there and all the farm ponds they are still ice fishing on. Let alone squaw creek is 90 percent froze yet. Been hunting down there for 10 years now It is normally the middle of march before it is real good.

South Dakota F&G reports two small flocks of snows showed up at Yankton on monday…..We’re headin out Saturday to find em .

Seriously though……weather holding true……there should be the first flocks of huntable numbers of geese in SoDak this weekend. Either way, it’s gonna be too nice to sit at home and wonder if they’re there…..So we’re goin!!!

Jake – Let us know if you are running across a lot of juvies in the mix yet. My inlaws are from Yankton, so that is where I am going to be heading. To bad I can’t make it down this weekend, probably could offer you guys a place to stay right on the river. I was going to wait another week though. All the flags and other gear are up at Leech right now, so I have to go and round them up.

Believe it or not. While driving to work this morning on HWY 14 between Kasson and Dodge Center, I encountered a flock of snow geese heading south. Estimated number of about 30. I thought maybe they were just pigeons or something at first so I tailed them for a little bit to get a closer look. I wish I had the camera.
