Spring Snow Goose Hunting

I started something I shouldn’t have last night. I fired up my wood stove and started working on my snow goose decoys. Now I cannot stop thinking about it,a nd it is a couple months away yet. We tend to try and hit the tail end of the migration, we have found that the front end is just to hard to hunt, the old snows and blues have seen it all many times. Spring snow goose hunting is alot of work, but when it pays off, it is all worth it. I just purchased a Jonny Stewart ultimate predator call. Has anyone ever used the snow goose chip for these? If so, how did you like it? I know that there are multiple tapes out there that we currently use for Jonny Stewart tape player that the geese react different too, just wondering what options are the best for this new type of call?

I’ve never been snow goose hunting but I plan on it every year and then something has always came up right before we’re leaving! My buddy does it and he did use my johnny stewart caller a few times and did really well. Now he got sick of setting up decoys and plus one of the guys moved so there went half of their spread so they just do the fencline thing now. I’m not sure what tape they used. I know this will sound dumb but obviously he said that he only used feeding tapes on feilds where they’ve been feeding and they used hand calls with them. He also said they’d have the caller on full blast pointing straight up. I know I haven’t been much help but don’t scare away from using it. Good luck.

We currently use the Jonny Stewart Tape players now, I purchased the Preymaster from Jonny Stewart. It is light, only takes double A batteries and can have multiple sounds from a exchangable plug in card/chip. I was just curious to what different options are out there for snow goose hunting.
You definitely need to try and get out there! If you love waterfowl hunting, you will love this. To see the migration is something every hunter should experience once! But do it once and you will go back every year. I am lucky to have some committed partners for hunting snows. We have quite a bit of decoys and calls that we all pitch in and buy and we will be doing it for a long time to come hopefully. It also feeds the hunting addiction in the spring! Now its Snows and Turkeys in the Spring, Food Plots in the summer, Regular hunting in the fall and Coyote hunting in the winter! My wife is so happy!

Yep I know the feeling. I’m the same way I’m always thinking about hunting. Going after coyote this weekend. I will make it out there for sure. I love hunting geese and I’m gonna be talking to my buddy here in the next couple of days to maybe put something together for this spring. I hope it works out this year!

From what I can read and have found, there are huntable numbers in Missouri already and they are starting to move into Nebraska. I guess SoDak has about 5 inches of snow and 20+ inches of ice on the lakes and ponds. The group we hunt with will probably head out the 3rd week of March. I am excited, but with the variations in the weather we are having lately, the migration might happen in one big jump and they will push through SoDak to the Canadien border. Just like last year, it is going to be tough to predict when the best hunting will be! Any thoughts or precitions?

It all depends on the weather, but from the looks of the extended forcast I’d expect to see the first flocks in South Dakota by the 6-7th of March….remember the birds usually move faster than the internet.

We’re planning on heading out the 8th to catch the first flights…..prime time should be the second and third weeks of March, just like it is evey year.
